2.5 Gt
Hey guys,
This is my first time posting here. I am a newbie with the Legacy. I was wondering what your thoughts are on a '98 GT, it has 80,000 miles on it. Is there anything that I should look out for? What should I expect to pay? I checked out KBB, they said under 10,000. Looking to modify it. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Nick

Could be a nice car. I know, at least where I live, all the Subarus that are for sale have tons of miles on them. This doesn't have to be a bad thing. I bought my '98 with 99k on it If the car was well maintained, mileage should not be a problem. KBB is a pretty good source for pricing, I don't think I could really give you any other advice on pricing.
As far as modifying the car, parts are available, but of course they aren't as easy to find as impreza stuff. If you really want power, go for a turbo http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...ighlight=turbo |

yeah nice car.
but there again, ther isn't much that you can do to them. and yeah if you want grunt get the turbo, manual. i know from experience that there isn't too much that you can do to mod the twin turbo one, with out spending $$$$$$$ |

Ya, thanx.
What I want to do with the car is going to be more dirt road type stuff. I would like to get the Kumho ECSTA R700 for tires. I like the prodrive wheels. Trying to find if they will be able to fit those tires. Also stiffer suspension, upgraded clutch etc. Exhaust and turbo also. |

Get it checked by a good subie mech and have them pressure test it and get the coolent sniffed. This will help you a lot. If it did get the head gaskets done check to see if they used the new metal ones that so far seem to have sovled the overheating problem. Just make sure all the recall work is done. (I can get you a list if you want) I wouldn't trade this car unless it was for a 2005+ Legacy (not here yet Great car with lots of potential if you do it right, get the suspension work done first (great tires are a very good place to start). after that you can start adding power. I wouldn't turbo until you get the engine working great to handle the stress ie: head gaskets Most stuff that fits the 2.5RS will fit the legacy as well. PS: any warrenty left? |

Thanx,
Ya could you give me the recall list, please. I'll check the head gaskets. I'll have everything checked out. Any advice for parts, like everything lol. How are the stock brakes, I'm probably going to get new brakes. Anybody know of sites where I can learn everything about the car? What companies do you all recommend for performance parts? Help appreciated. I'm sure I'll think of a lot more to ask THANX. Peace, Nick |

Here's the list I promised...but there are somethings that I don't see on there like the recall on the alternator and master brake cylinder. If I remember more I'll tell you. As for sites to learn about the car, here is a very good start. You might want to check out www.scoobymods.com as well. Another Legacy tuner is Cobb Tuning. Something like their stage 2 setup gets you up near 200 hp without breaking the bank. They are still working on the header though.

2.5L Legacy GT
413Rally,
If this helps you in your considerations, I have a 1997 Legacy GT 2.5, that I bought new in August 1996, so it should arguably have more problems than the 1998 cars, yet mine has had no problems. My 1997 Legacy GT has 92,000+ miles on it, and I've never had a problem with it. Its an automatic transmission car. I drive it HARD, and I never wash/wax it, but I change the oil every 3,000 miles. I have yet to get a tune up. The car runs very strong. It is the best car overall that I have ever had, and I've had quite a few, including some more expensive vehicles like an Acura Legend Coupe and an Audi S4. Considering the price, reliability, and driving dynamics of this car, its clearly the best value out there. My GT is now approaching seven years old, and its still on the original spark plugs and the original battery. The car has only needed an alignment once in all those miles. I've posted in these forums before about looking at other more expensive vehicles (such as Audi S8, etc), but I still keep thinking that I love this 1997 Legacy GT too much to get rid of it. I consider it the best commuter car, for me. Every morning and every night, I have a combined stop-n-go and highway drive to work in the suburbs of Philadelphia, of roughly 20+ miles each way, and I make it in 30-minutes. The car regularly sees speeds well in excess of certain speeds (I won't say how fast, to avoid the flamers, but its up there). Its all stock, no mods. It feels light and nimble. This car feels like it can thread a needle in dense highway traffic. In short, I cannot recommend it highly enough. One of the other posters commented that the high mileage may not be problem at all. I agree. If I didn't have this car, I'm not sure I would have believed it. I think mine runs just as strong at 92K miles now, as it did when it was brand new. This is the first car that I have ever considered keeping for such a long time. I might buy another vehicle, but I'll probably keep the '97 GT as an extra car because its just too good to get rid of, and its worth a lot more to me than the price I could sell it for. By the way, the tire pressures make a huge difference in handling feel. I won't get into specifics (because of self-proclaimed experts who flame those of us who use high tire pressures), but just remember to experiment with the tire pressures to get the right balance of comfort and handling that you like. The Subaru "recommended" pressures are way too low. I hope this helps you. Dave G |

Hey thanks a lot.
I will have more questions soon. I might even be able to get a few pics up of the car. I am trying to figure out the details now. |
