Question Undercarriage Armor / Differential Protector?

I'm looking for some tips on making some plates for the undercarriage of my car. I want to make a plate to put on the bottom of the engine compartment so I can go off-roading more and not crap my pants when I hear a rock slam on the bottom of my car.
I also want to make a rear differential protector. I know Subaru and Primitive has them, but I'm more of a hit home depot and spend a weekend making my hands bleed from trying to do everything myself.
A question I have about this is, will this effect my cooling in the engine compartment any?
Also, are there any other areas I should pay attention to? (Like that little black box in the back to the right of my differential?)
Sorry for the long post, but I really want to do this!
Thank you all!
Bry

How about the O2 sensor area? Should I make something to protect that, or is it ok already?

Some ideas for your research
Prodrive catalogs if possible to get they show all the plates they use on the rally cars.

Cobb sells like LDPE bush gaurds (see the vandor forum for diagram)

Also you may wanna contact the US rally team backed by prodrive for the best areas and materials.

I'm in the same boat, I cant afford the spendy (although pre done and we know they work) guards. I'd love to do this as well. So whats the deal with that little black box? a vent? also I'm still waiting about the engine cooling thing, maybe drill 1-2" holes all over the plates for cooling?
I'm thinking I can just go to somewhere and get some sheet aluminum for sheep and bend the stuff myself? and how hard is it to drill holes in sofr alu...not very. the problem will be getting the holes lined up correctly, I'm sure you can find the mounting hardware at anywhere hardware store too. It'll take some time and thought....but hey it'll be cool to save money and do it your self right. Tell me who things are going so far.
