Default Review Request: Gruppe-S Uppipe

It's cheap at $139. Is it a matter of, "It's just a pipe, why pay more?" or "You get what you pay for." I'd like to know from anyone that has one installed.

Thanks.

I've had mine on for 2,000 miles. No leaks, so far so good. As of now, I'm glad I didn't fork over $300+ for an uppipe, but we'll just have to see how it holds up in the long run.

sc wrx...i'm in the same boat as you.

I just ordered my gruppe-s uppipe. From what i heard, its a good investment, the welds and such are top quality. So we shall see.

Default Good to go!

well, I got my gruppe-s up pipe about 2 months ago and so far no problems at all. I did however, when the pipe was first put on (self install), get some minor leaking at the top where it meets the turbo, but I came to the conclusion it was due to reusing the stock gaskets. It appears it took a couple of days for it to "re-seat" itself and as of then, not a worry in the world. No CEL and the upgrade was well worth the $140... shipped no less!! I think it is an awesome pipe and i hope it has a long life. Granted, the other pipes such as the MRT with the flex joint, look appealing- but c'mon $300 plus??!!! Nahhh, go Gruppe-S

Default Polished/unpolished

Are there any advantages/disadvantes of the unpolished version besides just looks? Is paying an extra $20 worth it for a peice that won't even be looked at?

IMO i think its just for looks...but correct me if i'm wrong.

I got my Gruppe-S Uppipe & HKS Downpipe installed on Friday. Those 2 were a great upgrade to my car. I can hear my turbo spool and it spools faster. Its a great piece for the price.

Gruppe-S: 2 Thumbs UP!
My stuff arrived a few days after being order. Packaging and all was good.

just got my gruppe-s up-pipe, some notes:

i.d. on the tubing looks to be 1 7/8", flanges are 1/2" machined, and the turbo end has studs installed. it has one bung for the egt probe and the welds look great, very neat and clean. gaskets were included.

from someone who has some minor welding experience and welding inspection certifications, these look great. i wouldn't hesitate to recommend this pipe. $140 well spent and i would bet these are as good, if not better than the others on the market. i am going to install it this weekend, i will post up how it fits when i am done.

p.s. great service again from gruppe-s!

just wanted to quickly comment on the install.

Pain in the ass, took me 5 hours (with a long lunch break and some swear breaks). nothing complicated, just a lot of tearing apart to do. the stock egt sensor is an odd size, didn't seem quite 14mm, but it was bigger than 13mm? hmm.....

anyway, fit and finish was good, no leaks and it seems to give some power. i would say it gives a bit more than a catback but not as much as a downpipe (as these are all installs i have done recently).

so... $140 well spent as far as i'm concerned.

Hmm. I find these threads perplexing, because I have not had a great experience with gruppe-s up-pipes.

Here's the thing. I ordered one, and the pipe part of it was not lined up with the flanges, particularly on the engine side, as seen below:

http://www.pbase.com/peter_kuhn/up-pipe

So I asked for a replacement, was told that the one I got was of a bad batch, and would be replaced. A month or two later, I finally get it. This version is very similar in quality and alignment to the first one, except rather than having the pipe & flange not line up on the engine side, they don't line up on the turbo side, which is better.* In addition, there's a lot of weld metal on the inside of the pipe, where the bung meets it, and also where it's welded to the flanges. This may be a common thing, but I looked at an ATR model, and it's insides were sanded/ground out. Much smoother. Alas, I have no pics of the second pipe, which I do plan on installing, once I've smoothed it's insides out.

Both were unpolished models.

Default make sure you...

wash it out with water and than let it sit and really dry it out with a rag on the inside....

performance gain- well all i have before was a drop in, 3/16 boost mod, and silencer hack, so its really the first mod that might increase hp
What it did? in second gear at half throttle or just a little more i see full boost!...something that didnt happen before...turbo seems to be happier, egts MAY have dropped a tad due to the lack of 1 cat.
what does the butt dyno say? with 3 people including the driver, we STILL noticed a difference....that being said its a worthy mod to do...anymod that can make you notice a difference with MORE weight in the car...is always a plus...was it a pain? yes...would i pay to have it done next time OHHHH YOU BET...but now i have an extra 250 in my pocket...which i'll take my friends out to dinner for helping me.

the question of how long it will take? well with all the right tools...(more than whats listed)
for someone who has never touched a wrx? well dont plan on going anywhere quick....it took an embarrassing...well 12 hours...
i know...but some of those were standing around etc....waiting for the bmw master tech to come over and help. how long did it take once he got there? about 2 hours 1 night, and 6 hours the next...this is being VERY VERY meticulous and torquing EVERY SINGLE BOLT....we didnt have torque specs so every bolt i had to look up on the internet or post HELP ME in the newbie section...

overall, the up pipe is a great mod...im glad it is out of the way

w00t just got mine installed today!

Lag is decreased alot and no leaks so far.

I don't know if I feel a huge amount of power increase yet though, but maybe I'll start to feel it when my ecu adapts to it
