Default Mesh Fog/Driving Lamp Covers

In less than 3 weeks I have taken a rock in each Hella 500, and now find myself having to replace both lamps.

Can anyone tell me how well the light shines through the mesh covers that are available, or would I be better off to get metal cages from Hella. Just curious if the covers are cosmetic only.

If the light has good penetration (Kevin, TMR, Tora, it doesn't get any better than this) then I would be interested if anyone has black or blue ridge pearl covers for sale.

Thanks.

Doug

Thanks Derek, but that doesn't help me out.

I need someone who has driven at night with the covers to tell me how much light the covers block.

I have installed a set of hella 500 for my friend and also installed the mesh covers for him awhile ago. Based on what I saw the light shine on the garage door, I didn't notice that there was a big difference with the mesh light covers (same flat, wide beam pattern). But I haven't test it out on street yet, so I really can't say the mesh covers make no difference.

Thanks Andy, at least I know the beam pattern isn't broken up.

Anyone have a set of these for sale, or know the cheapest place to get them?

An alternative to mesh is to use something like the stonguard product. It's very thick, protects really well, and it does not interfere with the light pattern. If you lights are not too bad, this will actually stop it getting any worse and seal it from the weather.

Well i was lucky and bought some from a guy in Alberta who was selling his pair. Keep checking the private ads on here or on Ebay. I have seen them go for any where from $50 to $75 (USD)on ebay.

EDIT: What do a pair of hella 500 cost?

Petrie... thanks for the idea. Seeing as both are beyond repair and are letting in moisture, I have to replace them.

It would make sense to put a film put on when they are new.

Woody...thanks, I'll keep my eyes open. I have the factory solid covers, so maybe I'll try doing a mod. Hellas were $120 tax in from Lordco (30% discount everyone can get) when I bought mine.

Edit - also picked up some 85W bulbs, and these are very BRIGHT.

Just a word of caution in case you do get the Stongard covers... they state on them that they're only good up to the stock 55 ( or was it 65?) wattage... anything over and they may melt.

About 90% of the light shines through. And it has a "meshy" look on the ground. However, I'm using OEM fog lights, and i know hellas are much brighter... so don't worry about light loss

I think the hellas sticks out a tad more than the stock fogs and will not fit under the covers, that's what my friend with hellas told me, so you better check 1st
