Default MY99 RS overheating and dying during idle, blue and white smoke...

Heres the scenario. I turn the car on and let it idle for liek 5-10 mins (what I do on routine to let the car warm up). During this time my car blows blue smoke do to a leak in the oil seal on my passenger side turbo. It;s usually normal and smokes for maybe a minute. Lately it has been worse and smokes for about the length of the warm up. The thing is it doesn't look only blue but a little white as well. After its warmed up it idles at around 700-800 rpm. the temp guage looks okay and the car sounds good. WHen I drive it it smokes in teh beginning then I don;'t see any noticeable smoke coming form the pipe unless I gas it, which then produces smoke, looks dark and blue i guess. AFter I drive it and come to a stop light or any kind of complete stop the car will sometimes start to shutter and the oil light will flicker. Eventually the car feels like its going to die so I give it gas. One of two things happens: Either 1) I catch it and the oil pressure light flickers and I rev the engine and keep it from dying or 2) I gas it and the car shutters really badly the oil light flickers, check engine light flickers and the engien sounds like it wants to keep running but all I get is a bunch of white smoke coming up through the hood. BTW, if i do end up catching teh car and gassing it so it doesn't die it'll die after the cars rpm drops back to idle . Doesn't even stop for idle speed just goes straight down and dies. I drove to the side of the road and let the car sit for a while. Popped the hood and now smoke no weird smell. Tried starting the car and all it did was do the wee wee wee thingy and was blowing massive amounts of white smoke out the back. Let the car sit for a little longer gave it some gas and cranked the ignition. After a couple of cranks the car turned over and started up. I kept revving the engine because I didn't want to risk having the car stall on me again. got it home and parked it. let it idle for a sec and then it died on me. Car doesn't over heat during driving just when it's stopped and usually dies before it over heats.

My car was fine until a couple weeks back when I did an oil change. THe day after the oil and filter change the car started acting up. DUnno if its just coincidental and the car already was having problems but just now decided to over heat on me. I had the coolant replaced almost 3 months ago, and I think i forgot to bleed it, but never had an overheating problem until now. And so far I have never noticed the coolant thermostat to go above the middle mark.

As far as I know the fans are working. What other problems could it be. I have searched some of the other posts and they are all diagnosis on a phase I MY98. Head gasket? Cylinder head? piston rings (for blue smoke). Plannign on takign car to shop on monday for compression test ,leak down test and coolant sniffer test.

Current mods:
TEC2
MAgnecore spark wires
550cc injectors
Fuel pump
2 garrett T25 turbos
Custom spearco intercooler
Dry sump oil pump
I think those are all that are relevant to this issue???

Thanks

John

Default oil pressure

Sounds like you have a serious oil pressure problem. Changing oil might have made it worse, since that usually means a dry start. Or something was washed into the oil pump gears or pressure valve when you put in fresh oil. In any case, it's engine removal time, I am afraid...

Sounds like a blown head gasket to me. Check your collant see if there are any signs of it being mixed with oil. If there are its def. the head gasket.

I have to concur with slim speedy - it definitely sounds like a blown head gasket.

Default OIl pressure problem?

vvk: You said that I had an oil pressure problem. Does this mean that I have to replace the internal stock oil pump? When you say "engine removal time," what do you mean? WHat needs ot be done? engien rebuild? new oil feed land return lines? How extensive is this (getting a little uneasy)... I am using an aftermarket dry sump oil pump to pump the oil out of the turbos. I haven't had any problems with both of them working together becaus trhw dry sump pump only is connected to the feed and removal lines of the turbos and not the engine. THe oil oressure light seems to be okay but maybe not? Shoudl I check oil levels again and see if I need to top it off seeing how the internal capacity of the pump itself may be fillign up and taking some of the oil away form the engine? I am pulling the engine out in about a month (enough time for em to save money), but isnt it kind of a "doozy" to pull the stock oil pump out? SHould I buy an aftermarket oil pressure guage?

slim speedy: HAven't had to checkl car for a week now becuase of work but checking today will post whats in or not in the coolant.

Default Checked.

Today I checked the overflow tank of the coolant and saw something I didn't see during the oil change. A nice brown color inside the tank. No more nice white plastic on the inside. I also saw a little bit of residue on the surface of the coolant. I guess this means I have a blown headgasket. and will have to examine the internals, meaning block, cylinder head, pistons and rings.

How likely is it that the cylinder head will crack when a head gasket is blown? Rings? pistons heads? block? Hoping that its just the gasket. I stopped running the car real hard the moment the car was acting up so not alot of boost after problems started arising and the car has been only turned on once in the last 3 weeks and plan on not turning it on till it gets fixed. I heard cylinder heads can crack because of the pressure made by the steam but not sure. Are blown rings a more probable possibility? I was thinking since I already pulled the engine out I was going to service the engine and drivetrain, a mild rebuild.

Replace both timing belts
Replace all oil seals
Replace pistons rings on all 4 pistons
Replace both head gaskets
Replace intake manifold gaskets
Replace exhaust manifold gaskets
Replace clutch anfd flywheel

Am I missing anything that should be done while the engines out?

I would also like to replace Camshafts if possible. What are the best aftermarket "turbo" camshafts available? OR is regrinding a better way if I have specs?

Thank you.
