Default Newbie Q: UPS

I just bought something from the States worth $120 Canadian and he paid for the shipping. It was marked as a "gift/used" but will I still get taxed? If so, how much?

Not neccessarily so. If he puts a very low value on it you will not be charged tax on it. And as a used gift you would not.

I hate getting items shipped here from the states using UPS...

now if it's marked as 'gfit', it may not be taxed... I got a PS2 shipped to me from Asia tax free when my gf marked it as 'gift'...
maybe I got lucky

but I remember I one ordered a set of Euro-clear blinkers for my Prelude... it cost me 13 bux USD... now I was expecting to pay a little dutie, maybe like 7bux CDN or something like that... but UPS was very g@y and charged me $19CDN... when I looked at the receipt... they charged me $15 bux for handling fee and 4 bux for dutie... this is just really bad cuz I know Canada post only charge you like 6 bux for handling and brokage fee...

and after this... I've never bought any thing from the states and have it shipped by UPS... it's just g@y...

thats why when you buy stuff from the states...always request them to use USPS instead of UPS...USPS (united states postal service) obviously wont charge as much taxes and stuff..and always request them to mark as gift...most places will do that for you

From my experience having tons of things shipped from the States, it generally works that if it's marked as a gift, it won't be charged tax/duty up to a certain amount in value that it's declared for... if it's declared over a certain amount it will still get charged some. However it won't nearly be charged as much as if it were marked as merchandise.

UPS also charges much more in fees than does standard USPS (US Postal Service).

HTH.

Cool

Derek,

Im most cases if you use UPS you will be charged some sort of tax/broker fee.

I find UPS the worst when it comes to overcharging. For example I just got fuel rails sent with a package value of 50 dollars USD.

I got charged 45 dollars CAD total including tax/handling/broker fees.

Best bet is to use USPS.

Shoot Instead of getting a good deal from the States, I might be way over my budget. If its $120 and marked as a gift, I only hope I get dinged under $20CAD. Sigh. Thanks guys! At least I learned something..

you're gonna get dinged more than that for 120 bucks..

my tailights were 150-160US marked as gift, i had to pay 80 cdn

my clear corners were 50US and i paid 45CDN

you can see the rates on UPS's website.

Duty is only charged on items over $100.00 USD, but as others have mentioned, you get dinged for brokerage fees from UPS regardless of the value.

If you must go with UPS, you can always call UPS with the tracking number and notify them that you will clear your package yourself, rather than have them clear it and charge you the brokerage fees.

UPS is the WORST carrier for cross border shipping in terms of charges on handling.

Just got off the phone with UPS and the person didn't really know either. But this is apparently how it goes..for anybody who plans to do UPS..I know I wont..

Original amount x PST% = Amount 1
A certain amount x 2.5%USD or 4.5%Canadian (whichever is cheaper) = Amount 2

In my case its

$75USD x 1.46 = $109
$109 x 0.07 = 7.63
Amount 2 = $16.75

$16.75 + $7.63 = $24.38

Grr! I might as well have bought it from Canada
