Unhappy need help with painting a door

hello, first post here so be kind .

my wife just bought a '93 Impreza. it's an awesome car and we love it! one problem is that the rear left door needs to be replaced due to a BAD dent that's alredy rusted. so we called up a parts yars and asked for a PURPLE DOOR. i made certain about 10 times that it was purple. so what did they send us?

a FREAKING green door!

and they won't take it back because they "don't guarantee color".

so anyways, should we:

1) sell the door to someone here who might need it
2) get it painted
3) prime it and have a shop blast it
4) slap the door on and bring the whole car to MAACO and tell them "just do what you can for $250.

thanks a ton!

Whatever you do, don't do #4 unless they can do just the door and match the car (though I'd avoid Maaco at all costs). My vote is for #2 at somewhere that'll do a good job.

thanks!

offhand, how much do you think it would cost to repaint a door in that subaru purple? the PPG paint costs $29.00 a pint.

thanks!!!

Probably the easiest thing to do is put a blanket in the back seat, and take the door to a REPUTABLE body shop. The door will need "cut in" (painting the inside edges). If you don't remove the interior parts carefully, you WILL damage them.

My best guess on cost:

door cut in-0.6 hrs
R&R door-1.4 hrs
R&R interior trim for door cut-in-0.5 hrs
Paint exterior of door-color-2.3 hrs
Paint (blend) joining panels-3.0 hrs
Clearcoat all-4.5 hrs

This is if blending the joining panels is ness or wanted. You could tell the shop to match it the best they can, and leave it at that.

$416 if blending
$224 if not

my best guess only @ $32 an hour

Thumbs up

thanks for the info!!!

i got the situation resolved last night. i called my credit card company and refused payment of the door. after all it was the WRONG PART they sent me and charged my $250 for it.

the painting info is valuable though. we might get the whole car redone.

thanks again!

Or you could always stop payment on your credit card!

Oh well.

http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=793527

i was soooo ticked off when they sent me the WRONG part. i mean if you screw up, it's hard to screw up worse than this!

thanks for the help though!
