Default What the hell is wrong with it?

My car is broken. Situation: When I start the car, it starts just fine, but then as I drive, the car falls on its face. Its almost like its not getting gas, and then all of a sudden it gets gas -- takes off like a bat out of hell.

I have to keep the RPMs extremely high in order to keep the car running...every once in a while when I stop, the car stalls.

At idle, the car runs very rough and tends to lobe pretty noticeably. I can't understand why I hit the gas pedal and nothing happens. Anyone have any ideas?

Fuel pump?
Sensor?
Bad Gas? (I got 100 or so miles on the tank before this happened)

Any help would be appreciated.

Garret

could be fuel pump or clogged fuel line or clogged fuel filter...could even be a tranny problem..or clogged injectors too

Yeah, I heard some weird noises too......like the fuel pump whining? I don't know, whining may not have been the best description.

Some kind of idle problem maybe?

My friend with a 12 second WRX has that problem once in a while...its really bad at times. Looks like he can't drive what with all the bucking and high rpms needed to keep the car from stalling.

I had a similar problem in one of my old cars when the idle control motor was dieing. I dunno what Subaru uses in the way of that device.

Doubt that it's the idle control, cause the majority of the problems occur not at idle......its like i have to hold the gas pedal down as it chokes its way up to 3000 rpms....then all of a sudden, it goes like a bat out of hell.

Hard to describe....don't know what the noise was.

check your TPS sensor....sounds like my car a couple months ago and i checked that and it was fine. Your voltage should be between .45 and .55 i believe...ask Brian (RHDUDE), he can tell you better.

So the TPS was the problem?

The TPS signal should be between 0 and 5v from zero throttle to full throttle - give or take .5v. Sounds like it could be the problem. Has your car even thrown a CEL yet? Might be able to get the diagnostic code even if its not.

I had a similar problem with my '01 RS last fall. I don't have any idea what caused it, but It stopped doing it after I cleaned my battary posts and connectors. Maybe the car didn't have a good enough ground. I dunno.

I have NGKs....one heat range cooler than stock (nitrous).

New development-went out this morning to start the car and see what would happen, and it started fine. Seemed to be running alright, so I let it idle to warm up. I let it sit for about five minutes or so and everything seemed to be alright.

Then I hit the gas and revved it up to about 3000 rpms..It came back down to about 750rpms just fine and then gradually (10-15 seconds) the rough idle/cutting out/shaking started happening again.

Does this shed any light? TPS? 02?

I've also had a similar problem for the last two days. My car would idle really bad and when i drive it would hesitate really bad and then go. Would drive really bad till i got to the higher rpms and then i would get a flashing cel light so i pretty much slowly limped it home since i was 2 blocks from it. My guess is i'm getting the cel because of a misfire. Gonna go ahead and try to replace the plug wires since its about time that i should anways. If that doesn't work i'll probably replace the coil see if that helps. Keep us posted and let us know what happens. We might not have the same problems but i'm getting the same hesitation that you are talking about.

Also have you replaced your fuel filter regularly? If not then that could cause ur fuel pump to malfunction early because it would have to work harder to get the gas with the clogged fuel filter. But my guess is that if that were the case your car probably wouldn't start at all and just turnover.

02 sensor sounds reasonable...
It's what my problem was about a year ago.

But why doesn't it throw a CEL?

I can't understand it.

Try an ECU reset, see if it goes away.

I'm going to try this........it wasn't the TPS sensor - I'm having NO CEL. Taking it to the dealership tomorrow if the problems persist.

I'll bet you have a fouled plug or wire that is working part of the time. You could have fouled the plug easy with Nitrous. The CEL won't come on if it's not misfiring too bad.

look under the hood at night while the car is running, if it's misfireing you'll see crazy sparks. and you'll hear it arcing.

You probably already know this, but I just figured i'd throw it out there.

Thanks for the reply, but that's not it I don't think............They replaced all the plugs yesterday and its still running like crud.....I'm going to try to get it to Subaru today.
