Default Spark Plugs, CEL's, Misfires, and UTEC issues

The history:

TXS Stage 4
PE1818F
all the fixin's
UTEC 2.5b open loop, TXS STG4 Base Map w/3 degrees timing pulled on every value in IGN Map. Fuel and Boost values never touched.

Been running one step colder OEM NGK plugs, pulled them last night to find the area from 4 threads on up onto the top of the plug colored dark red/ maroon brownish. Typically this is normal in color. I have been running 17.5psi to 20psi with these plugs over 15,000mi.

Last week I had some watered down Shell fuel from Kenosha, WI in the tank and my knock meter was showing it...basically some 2nd green led flashes, which have not appeared with the UTEC until that tank of fuel.
I decided to run the tank to 1/4 full, and fill her up with some 100octane race fuel to dilute the "water". Pulled her in the garage and swapped plugs to a new set of NGK BKR7E's gapped to .026 (I am currently running 17.5-18 psi).

Fired her up, ran around town for an hour, no problems, very little 2nd led knock flashing, pulls good, no hesitation, added 2 degrees of timing (I pulled 2 degrees with that bad fuel), still running good.
Turned her off, let sit for 2 hours. Fired her back up and ping, CEL. So I am getting a CEL on start-ups. The last CEL's I pulled after a clutch/flywheel install (disconnected neg battery cable) were misfires on cylinder 1, 2, and 4.

What do you guys think is happening? Plugs? Coil packs? Fuel?

I am at a loss

Do you have an aftermarket crank pulley or lightweight flywheel?

Here is a quick rundown of my situation. It all started happening after I installed my Exedy lightened flywheel. Let me start out by saying I know of two other people with the exedy and they get misfires typically in cyl 1&3. I myself also have a stock-size lightened crank pulley as well.

I had the lightened pulley set on my car for about 45k miles and only got 1 CEL for misfires (was when I had the unichip and RIGHT after a ECU reset). Then I got the lightened flywheel installed and the only correlation I have come up with so far with minmal experimentation is the following:

-Only seems to happen on cold days <=30F out.
-Tried different gas stations. Only two different brands when it was cold and the only difference I saw was with one I got ONE misfire code of cyl 1,2,3 (my scanner only shows 3 codes at a time) so maybe/probably cyl 4 as well.
-EVERY single time the car is <5% load and usually warming up/cold starts. This information I pulled from the freeze frame data

That is about all I have. I am running NGK double plat. one stage colder as well. One person suggested I try swapping out the plugs to copper to see if that helps. But now that it's warmer out I don't get them anymore [shrug].

EDIT: should also add I am running STG4+TMIC/UTEC with an 18G all the usual bells and whistles. I had this problem before and after the rail install, but once again this problem ONLY started coming up AFTER I installed the lightened flywheel.

Nathan, first off...thanks for the quick weekend reply, you guys always seem to be on the ball with customer support.

I have the stock pulley installed.

If it helps any, I am currently "working" with Jorge (RiftsWRX) on tuning this set-up, he knows what I am running as well.

Any other questions?

I too am running a Exedy lightened flywheel + ACT clutch. That and new plugs are the only mods performed since re-connecting the negative terminal on the battery (right after clutch/flywheel install). I have filled up at least 3 tanks of IL/WI 93 octane since the the install as well.

Any chance this could be a over-sensitive CEL of misfires due to different tolerances placed on the crank and associated assembly?

Nathan, when I did have a lightened crank pulley on the vehicle with a Unichip/stock clutch and flywheel I did frequently see full blown knock events on my knock meter. Lets just say I removed it very quickly, my motor is the sensitive type

Post some logs of the misfire so we can try to detect what this is.. My guess is that you are getting misfire due to an overly rich mixture. In my experience this is almost always the case.. But, Cars are different and the only way to tell is to get a wideband AF monitor or have the car tuned on a dyno with a wideband.

Drove to Nirmits place, pulled CEL's: PO301, 302, 303, and 304 misfires on all 4 cylinders. Re-set CEL, now its off. Turned off motor and re-started to no CEL. Left Nirmits and drove to dinner, where cruising at 2,000rpms in 3rd gear triggered the CEL. Now its inconsistent, start-ups, cruising, but never on full throttle full boost...what gives?

The car is not likely experiencing a real misfire, but with that said, you need to start with the factory service manuals and run down the misfire diagnosis procedure. I know of at least one other case that sounds just like yours and tuned out to be a bad injector. The factory service manuals have the information you need. I doubt very much that tuning will fix your problem.

Maybe I am rusty on my log reading. But it looks to me like you are starting it and idling. While idlind your a/f goes from stoich to rich and then back up to 13:1? Is this correct? If so I don't see that sort of behavior on my car. Well I should say my FJO wideband always reports 14.5-14.8:1 range when I get the misfire. I am not looking at what the front/factory o2 sensor is seeing.

Going rich like that almost seems to me like maybe the UTEC 0% column isn't setup quite right meaning the stock ECU is trying to compensate for the larger injectors but just can't (runs out of operating +/-25 room)? Or maybe you have an intake leak of some kind? It just seems strange that the ECU would deviate from stoich like that with no TPS change or anything. I 'think' most vehicles start up hot/cold start in a pre-fixed open loop map and then after 10-20 seconds or so go to closed loop. . I don't know I am babbling at this point... but it just seems odd that your a/f would richen up like that.

Really really dumb question Jay...

You pull the plugs again? You went from annoyed by the second green on the knock link, to misfires... only things changing being the plugs...

This is true. Not for that fact that the second green led was pointing me in the direction to change the plugs, but rather the fact they have been in such severe conditions of Unichip knocks, previous misfires, very high boost levels, winter, hard driving, etc. I figured it was good to inspect the old ones and upon doing so I decided to giver her fresh ones.
But the questions still remains: with nothing else changed other then 1 bad fuel fill, why are these inconsistent misfiring present with brand new plugs

I really want to stay away from re-installing the pulled plugs.

Assume NOTHING... at LEAST inspect them...

loose plugs WILL do it as well...

Jorge, the plugs are torqued to factory spec with a high quality Snap-on torque wrench.

I guess I can pull one when I get home from work and check it out.

One thought, I torqued the plugs to factory manual specs, is this possibly too much?

I think it was something like 15 ft/lbs

Should I have done this some other way, kinda like when installing a oil filter...wait until contact is made then turn 1 full turn or more...you get my drift?

Now I know its a possibility to damage pulgs from over tightening.

I will check them when I get home from work.

I pulled a plug when I got home, looks completely normal...for several hours of use.

Checked the MAF, clean as can be, seals perfectly on tract.

Went for another ride around town, CEL still on, logged some runs off boost, everything seems o.k. except for the column on logger#1 titled IGN#1 (Duty).

What are the actual values, both minimum and maximum I should be seeing in IGN#1 (Duty)?

On boost I was getting 91% as a max for the above value. However today I saw values while letting the logger run during cruising higher then 100%. One of the values peaked when I shifted from a cold start idle into 3rd gear to set the sychros b4 going into reverse gear. Some other times were during actual cruising shifts, values in the thousands were seen.

Got my hands on a OBD code puller today. The last CEL was on for misfires in cylinders 1,2 and 4.

So I reset the CEL, took her for a spin, driving like I normally do, and sitting at a light is when the CEL came back on again, this time only cylinder #1 misfire.

Once again, any clues as to what is going on?
Who else has experienced this?
Motor is running fine, no knock.

Possibility of bad fuel still running through system. New plugs, no bad smells, leaking fluids, etc.

My last attempt will be to pull all the plugs again and reinstall the NGK PFR7G's which I ran for +15,000 miles and see if the misfires are still present.

Literally driving me nutz
