Default O2 CEL, replaced O2, still getting a CEL??

Okay. So several months ago I get a CEL on my 1997 OBS. It happened after a deep puddle (river? ) crossing. I thought I just had some water in the intake like last time this happened. So I pull apart my stock intake and there wasn't really any water. I replaced the filter, reset the ECU and was on my way. CEL comes back on, I notice my A/F gauge is acting funning. Figure it was O2 malfunction but I don't have any way of pulling a code yet. So I let it slide, car still seems to run okay. Occassional hesitation. Installed a K&N cone filter, no change. Rest of the intake/exhaust is stock. I have a S-AFC installed zeroed out accross the board.

I finally get my pocketlogger in and my O2 theories were correct. P0130 code. Some places list this as:

Front oxygen (A/F) sensor circuit range/performance problem (lean)

others (including my pocketlogger) as:

Front Oxygen Sensor Circuit Malfunction

Either way, I wait it out, as the strange bogging/hesitation/gas mileage gets worse and the weather finally gets better I change the O2 sensor to a Bosch universal 3-wire. Clear the CEL and reset the ECU. This was last saturday. Everything seemed okay. Ran the car for a while, A/F gauge still doensn't seem quite normal, slow to warm up, poor/erradic response. But no CEL and no hesitation.

Then I get some more hesitation, occasionally, when cold. Once it warms up it goes away. Then I pop another CEL, P0130 code. Clear it and 3 days later pop it again.

So I changed my spark plugs today, checked the O2 sensor connections, etc. Drove it for quite a while, still bad hessitation when cold. Got another CEL. Decided I'm stumped and started searching. I couldn't find any info at and all decided to post here.

I may try to swap the front and rear O2 sensors to see if that clears it up, otherwise I have no ideas at all. Do you?

You have 2 sensors there...

A/F
and an
02 sensor...

which one did you replace?

the AF sensor.. if it's dead... will cause all kinds of headaches...
O2 sensor will not longer read correctly and your fuel mixture will not be corrected... also, if this is your issue, your gas mileage will be way off... car wont run right.. etc.

that's my best guess in listening to your symptoms... it's likely not the 02 sensor, but the A/F sensor that's the problem.

this isnt the one you swapped right?

I think you've confused the daylights out of me Jamie!

Here's what I know, or think I know. Maybe I call the AF sensor something different. My car has two Oxygen sensors, one before the two cats, and one after. Both are the same, 3wire narrow band zirconia O2 sensors. My A/F gauge is reading the pre-cat O2 sensor.

I changed the front O2 sensor based on the very wrong readings on the A/F gauge, the CEL code, and the O2 voltage logs I took. I haven't touched the rear O2 sensor, and consequently the voltages seem to be okay in the logs (I think). I was under the impression that the only purpose of this O2 sensor was to check cat efficiency, but it had no bearing on the actual function of the fuel mixture. Perhaps I'm wrong on that one.

My idea was to swap the two sensors, put the seemingly good stock rear O2 in the front. And put the seemingly messed up Bosch Universal O2 in the rear where it wouldn't matter if it wasn't working correctly.

If all else fails I may bite the bullet and get a plug n play stock front O2 sensor from a Subaru dealer.

In more possitive news, I don't think my car has thrown a CEL in a couple days, and it SEEMS to be running somewhat better. I just wish I could PINPOINT the problem instead of this random crap. HELP!

Default UPDATE

A few days later, my car is continuing to run fine, with no CEL, no hesitation, and the A/F gauge is reading normal. Maybe whatever it was worked itself out, or maybe it has something to do with the recently cold arse temps for the last couple of days. Oh, and bump.

I think the O2 sensor in the rear has a different plug than the front. At least in my 99 RS it does. I just replaced my front with the same Bosch universal sensor since I couldn't get the olt one out of the cat pipe when I put my Random cat in.

Both are narrow band in the 99 RS as well.

Default Update

Well, on my way home from work this morning, my car popped another CEL, haven't pulled the code yet. I'm assuming its the O2 but I guess I really should pull it. The car was running fine, fully warmed up at 60mph on the highway when this happened. I'm fully stumped.

Fred: On the 99rs the front has a triagular plug and the rear has a square plug, right? On my 97obs the front and rear are both square. When the weather finally clears I'll test my theory out

I found a place that sells O2 sensors with a plug on the end for very close to the same price as my universal Bosch was...except the plug on the end is the tiangular one...not sure what sensor it is. I may try it with my original plug if I can't find another solution.
