Question Hesitation problem getting worse

The problem accurse when your in any gear around 3500 and up and you go WOT, there is a slight hesitation to accelerate but once the car gets to 4000 it really feels like thereís a loss in power. This continues till a little after 4500 and then it goes. Also on idle i noticed that itís gotten a little ruff, its like am tapping the throttle but the rmps are staying the same. The car is a 2002 and has 37,000miles on it. Have COBB CAI, strumong cat-back, lighten crank pulley.

Thanks for any help

Hey man, that sucks. How long has this been going on? Because if it's just started... you may have gotten some bad gas.. OR may have some water in there.. i dont know.. i hope you get it sorted out soon!

Justin.. oh, btw.. i still have your wrench!!! I'll get it back to ya as soon as i can.

There's a few things that could be causing it; search these forums for "hesitation" or "stutter" , it's been dealt with quite a bit recently. I've replied to a couple topics.

Could be ignition (wires or coil) or maybe your 02 sensor I think?

Best idea is to have your OBD-II scanned, if anyone local has a scanner. There are often codes thrown that aren't deemed important enough to turn the CEL light on.

good luck and hopefully your car's still under warranty,

This is what i was thinking, i know its not bad gas. I did take it to the dealer and they told me nothing was wrong, but it was under warrenty then, not anymore but if something big there going to know about it.

Took the car for a spirited drive tonight and it started hesitating pretty bad and accelarated very slow when i went WOT in any gear. Seem to get worse when the engine got hotter and it finally just shut off when i came to stop, I was thinking the fuel pumps overheating.

yeah i just remembered that.. you have fuel pump probs dont you! Did they not fix that? Or what? Hope you get it running good soon. I'd like to go to the track with ya soon to compare times seeing as how i will have a catback (custom) soon. So we'll have similar mods done, minus springs and short shifter (both on his)

Pete- check under the hood at night and see if its sparking. You should be able to hear it during the day, but at night you can see the sparks.

if so you should be able to isolate which cylinder is misfiring... make sure to get a new plug & wire. I made the mistake of changing only the plug once and it was a bad wire... the bad wire then fouled the new plug. I could have saved money just getting both at once.

Also check the fuel filter... how many miles you got on that thing anyway.

you could try one of the earth ground mods.. I built my own with parts from tweeter and it has cured my hesitation.

37,000 miles? Are you still on the stock plugs? Change those suckers out, they are most likely crappy Champions. If you haven't already do the 30,000 mile service, even if you do it yourself; plugs, fuel filter, etc.

The plugs and fuel filter were both changed out at 30k. It started up this morning, but once you try to accelarate it starts doing it again.

Thanks for the help guys, im thinking i might be taking a trip to the suby dealership pretty damn soon, the only thing is that im about 200 miles away from home.

I had a hesitation problem that turned into full out misfire after 4k rpm. I was changing plug wires and found that one of the posts on the ignition coil was burned up. I did the impedance testing and the coil tested bad. It also took one of the plug wires with it. You may want to give that a look see.

If you haven't changed your plug wires, I have a brand new set I want to get rid of. I replaced mine with Magnecors. PM or email me if interested.

Stop by a garage and a mechanic looked at it and played with it some, he came to the conclusion that it is the TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) he unplugged it and back in and the idle went normal but after some driving it goes back to the way it was. Does this sound right to anybody? The intake also made some popping noises when revving the engine.

At idle my car revs up and down and then it stalls. when i go it starts hesitatiing real bad and you can hear the car is at WOT but the RPM's are going down and car sounds like its gonna stall then bam it takes off. it does it in every gear. Im bringing it to my mechanic tommorrow. its really agrevating me cuz i have no clue what it is.

to see if it's the ignition: pop your hood at night-time. Try to do it someplace dark, away from street lights.

If there are blue sparks (very cool looking, by the way), there's something wrong in the ignition system; plugs, wires, or maybe your coil pack.

If this doens't help you see anything, then it's something else.

As mentioned earlier, try to scan for OBD-II codes. If you post in 'local' forums, someone might be willing to help.

good luck,

Just to reiterate: Check the wires and coilpack, but also pull your plugs and check them! Even though they were changed recently, pull them, especially so if they're of the "platinum" style. Two of my center electrodes were GONE after a mere 12k miles, and I had a nasty hesitation at anything more than about 20% throttle.

Check for sparks at night like these guys are saying. This sounds EXACTLY like a coil pack gone bad. Also take the plug wires off of the coil pack and check for corrosion on the terminals. If either of these symptoms are there, get the coil pack tested.
