Default utec and ECU resets

Quick question for the experts here ... I just picked up a UTEC and got it installed ... I don't have the boost turned up too much yet as I am still getting accustomed to the logging/maps. (This may be part of the problem ... not sure yet).

Mods are:
Perrin Catless DP
MRT uppipe
stock axle back

I am currently running the stg 2 map and seeing less than 1bar boost. Granted I have only made two pulls and I am curious if the ECU is still learning my style. Gonna post a small log where I got more knock than I wanted for sure ... if you can let me know what you suggest.

Have double checked map .. exact replica of the stg 2 map at TXS. Boost was less than 13. Always use 91 octane .. best I can get here in CA. Either Arco or Chevron.
Thanks in advance

You are going to blow up your engine! I have never seen a knock count go to 33. That is crazy. What kind of fuel are you running. There is something seriously wrong with the map that you are using. Use logger number 1 it gives more information. From what I can see it looks like your timing map might be messed up. Please turn down your boost until you get your car running without detonation. Then if you are using reasonable fuel, get some help from Turbo XS. JUst so you know, I run a really really agressive map and my car NEVER EVEN SHOWS A DET VALUE OF 1. While I was developing my map I occasionally say a det of 10 but no more.

DO NOT CONTINUE WITH A PULL IF YOU GET A DETONATION! FIX IT AND TRY AGAIN.

Yeah any knock above 20 is usually audible. Thats some serious knock Definately pull some timing there. I would stay out of higher boost until you get some different gas in that tank though. Just incase it is the gas.

IIRC, the stage 2 map is for 93 octane.

You may have gotten a tank of bad gas. I'd close the ABC and burn the gas off without going into boost. Then try again with a new tank of gas and a less aggressive map.

Yeah you are knocking all over the place. Something doesn't seem right. When I was on a stage 2 map it was like 10 degrees here. Even then I only got knock at one or two spots.

One little quirk of the UTEC is that it isn't "guarenteed" to log the knock event. Looking at the timing values is a better indicator of knock.

From 5200 - 5700 RPM you are "stuck" at 16 degrees of timing even though the stage 2 map should be at 25 degrees there. You only show three different knock events in that range, but you were knocking through that whole range. We know this because if you weren't, the UTEC would start advancing timing again within 100 crank cycles (default knock retard duration).

You can see at 5847 you jump to 24 degrees of advance. This is because that was the first time since 5200 RPM that you went 100 crank rotations without knock. You come up to 24 degrees of advance, but immediately start knocking again and continue knocking until you take your foot off the gas at 6105 rpm.

Something is definately wrong. You don't just have a couple of sporatic knock events. You are knocking over entire RPM ranges.

I think I would run this buy the TurboXS guys before you make any more runs, just to be safe. Hopefully you got some terrible gas or something.

Thanks Doc,

I've had the UTEC for 8 months and never realized that. I've seen quite a few logs with 'no knock' like you described. Although now, after you've described it, it seems like it's so basic that I should have extrapolated it, I just never put two and two together. I never asked the question, "why is my timing acting so quirky?"

Default thx

Thanks Doc for the info and description ... I spent a lot of time today looking at my two runs that I did make (driving the car out of boost and in stock default ECU mode atm) and made some preliminary changes to a stg2 map after I talked to Nathan this morning. Fortunately this tank of gas is almost gone and I will have a dyno day with some other UTEC cars coming in the next 2-3 weeks that should help. Hoping it is mainly a bad tank of gas that caused that god awful log. Any more help or suggestion is appreciated. I wish I had a datalog from #1 but unfortunately I am a little hesitant to say the least to make any more runs on any map until I lose this gas at least based on that knock count and timing data.

Thanks again
Fej

Did Nathan look at the log? What was his take on it?

not yet .. could not get the laptop online today but gonna try and email the log to him tomorrow after work. Am too lazy to save the file to a disc and send it blah blah. Anyways thanks again for the info and will post any findings I have when I hear back, hopefully to help more people out who have similar mods ....

I am really curious as to what nathan would say about the log as well .. its really too bad I did not have it on #1 ... ah well I know now hehe

For your 91 octane situation you should probably pull 2 degrees of timing from your entire map (maybe even more). You are definately knocking quite a bit that the Utec is not logging. IIRC every 1 octane point is about 1-2 degrees of less timing. I feel for you since I have to run winter blended gas 4-5 months out of the year.

I talked to Nathan and he emailed me a stg1 map slightly modified that I ran last night. Car ran better but still ran with less timing than mapped at the 70%+ load range with one logged incident of knock. Pulled 1 degree more timing in the 70 and 2 from the 80-90-100 in the 3750-5k range and smoothed some timing bumps out from 5k-5500. Will run that new map tonight and see how things go.

Thanks again for the advice ... a new tank of gas goes in tonight as well .. hopefully for the better.
