Default Front spacing question for wheel offset wizards

I had done some math and wanted to see if it was correct.

For my question disregard tire width/size etc.

My Legacy comes stock with a 6.5" wide wheel with +55mm offset. This equates(if I've done the math right) to ~ 27.6mm of wheel in front of the mounting surface. This sure doesnt seem right to me, but this is how I arrived at this:

(6.5 x 25.4mm)/2 - 55mm = 27.6mm

Is there really only a little over an inch of space from the face of the wheel to the mounting surface? Have I gone wrong here somewhere?

actually it is 27.55 mm from the bead area of the wheel to the mounting pad of the wheel

hehe - OK.

It just SEEMS farther back than that. Hey Luke the prob I am having is that I currently have 01 RS wheels on my car and they are about at the limit of what I want a wheel protruding out of my wheelwell. I may be in trouble as far as 17" options go.

RS wheel(+53mm) extends out 35.9mm
SDRs(7.5" +48mm) extends out 47.25mm
Wheel X(7.5" +45mm) extends out 50.25

Any thoughts?

17x7 with a 48mm offset or higher does work on the Legacy GT with no problems ... but tire choice is critical because the widest that works is 205

OK Luke I had a little to much time on my hands this evening and I have to say the above is incorrect. And I learned something new today.

I needed the tires pulled from my Legacy GT wheels anyway so I had them pulled today. And then I took some measurements on the bare rims:

With the wheel flat on its face on the ground the measurement from the front mounting bead to the mounting surface is 1 5/8" or 41.275mm. So it was farther back like I thought, but I think I figured out why. When I measured my 6.5" wheels from front to back, they are 7 5/8". Splitting that extra in half and adding it to the 27.55mm is just about spot on.

So I guess a wheel listed at 7.5 inches wide is closer to 8.5 inches then?

No, Luke is right. He's measuring from the bead, and you're measuring from the face. Wheel width is measured between the beads, not the extreme outer edges.

AHHHH! My mistake, I thought the bead was the small lip on the outside edge of the rim that the front part of the wheel weight nesteld under. The bead is the entire ~1/2" thick section of the edge of the rim then?

Pretty much, yeah. Try measuring the diameter of the wheel, also. You'll see that it's something like 17.5" instead of 16", because that is also measured from the inside of the beads and not the outer edges.
