Default Cheap-ish Toluene

So where do you guys buy Toluene 'round here (Seattle)? I just called Sherwin-Williams and the quoted me $12/gal. Seems a little steep. I was at this paint store on 80th and Aurora the other day and they wanted $70 for a gallon of it . I swear I am not making this up!!

Someone help, please. Where's the good stuff fer cheap?

I think I paid 7 something for mine at ponderosa paint ...

the reason it is hard to find is that it is one of the ingredients in meth

thus the reason home depot does not carry it any more

you might consider xylene instead

There are many different grades of Toluene and Xylene (or any other chemical for that matter.) Depends on what you are doing with it. Solvent grade is fine for most but specialty finishes sometimes require the higher grade. Kinda like using Supreme versus Regular.

Xylene is a medium drying solvent and Toluene is a bit heavier and petrol based than Xylene.

Word of Caution. Do not breathe Toluene vapors. It will kill you and make your children look like aliens.

$12 bucks is a decent retail price for a gallon. Disposing of it is another matter entirely.

call Cenex and see if they sell 94 there's one in Auburn & Issaquah, the one in Tacoma sells 94. If the formula is 1 gal. per octane pt. that would be $15 on the cheap side of things for toulene so it's worth the drive if they have 94 up there, that is unless your doing some race mix

I guess I should have added that I would like to use it as an octane additive. Not neccessarily in every tank.

There's a 76 right by my work (Boeing) in Mukilteo that has 100 octane race fuel. You have to ask for it out of a special can. It's 6.xx a gallon. 2 gallons of 100 octane =~ +1 octane pt.

So I guess 12/gal for 114 octane isn't that bad. I thought I heard of someone getting it for 6/gal if you bought multiple gallons. Looks like you can in Idaho.

Yeah, it is basically Methylbenzene and a few others like benzene, toluene diisocyanate, benzoic acid, phenylmethane, etc...

Store it in a cool dry place, in a sealed metal container and away from any cumbustable source.

"It is an ORGANIC compaound so it does decompose if exposed to any heat or oxygen and is highly flammable in both Vapor and Liquid. The vapor is heavier than air and may spread long distances and distant ignition and flashback are possible. Liquid can float on water and may travel to distant locations and/or spread fire. Toluene can decompose at high temperatures forming toxic gases." --From my OSHA Chemical Handbook (I'M NOT THAT BIG OF A BRAINIAC )

Perhaps not, but you're scoring MAJOR nerd points for quoting the osha handbook. I don't suppose you've got the msds sheet handy?

The local paint store here (Jaxx, the one on 40th next to Maztech) quoted me about $33 for 5 gallons. That seemed awfully expensive, given that there is a place in town that sells 105 octane gas which seems safer. I'm still debating whether I want to bother at all. My choices are:

91 octane at Chevron. Easy, but not 93 octane.

93 octane at Stinker. Easy, but 10% ethanol.

10g of 91 + 1g of toluene = 93 octane.

12g of 91 + 2g of race gas = 93 octane.

Since my Miata won't notice the difference, I have until the STi shows up to decide. Some good info here:

http://www.elektro.com/~audi/audi/toluene.html

BTW, thanks for the heads up on the other use for toluene. I actually have no idea why even paint stores carry it -- I just asked for a price and they looked it up -- didn't ask me why I wanted it.

Just FYI - It's illegal to use it as a fuel additive... so telling the full truth to the gal at the paint store about why you want it may not be the best way...

Interesting, had no idea it was illegal to use as a fuel additive. So, is anyone getting prices like in Idaho around here? I want to get some but don't want to pay $12/ gal.

I can guarantee that you will not be put on some Gov "list" if you buy Toluene. (But pay in cash none the less. )

Isn't toluene a ingredient for methamphetamines? What are you really using it for?
