Post US Spec New STI Seats

Saw the new STI at the NY autoshow.

I noticed the new STI Seats looks slightly wider than the JDM STI seats and they looks like Version 7 seats not Version 8.

If that's so, that's a bummer..

Exactly right. We're too big for the JDM seats.

I sure hope not. They had better be at least an inch narrower. If not, I'll be saving some my down payement to buy new seats imediately.

My impresssion from being at NAIAS and looking at the STi's seats and the WRX seats was that they are the same, just covered in different fabric.

I sat in the WRX, and didn't think they were bad. Not the best, but not bad.

If you (not Bill particularly, but anyone) are my size (175lb) or smaller, have driven in a '02 or '03 WRX, and drive in any enthusiastic manner, I don't see how you could like the '04 seats. I haven't driven the '04, just sat in it, but in auto-x I could see myself fighting to stay in my seat rather than being able to give all my physical attention to the petals and steering wheel.

JDM seats like mail order brides....it's one thing to lust for them based on a postcard....it's another thing to live with them for the rest of your life......

I like this remark: "i had to pee more often because the side bolsters press the kidneys"

Are y'all a bunch of smurfs? School kids?

I guess I'm one of the "oversized Americans" that the seats were made larger far, although I consider myself borderline skinny.

I'm 6', 180lbs and lanky but I am larger and broader (in the shoulders and hips) than the average Japanese (no offense little guys).

I'm glad manufacturers don't bring those little dollhouse seats over to America. My WRX seats are very snug and I love them!

Yeah one guy even said his kidneys bled lol. It's pretty funny to see guys complaining about thier prescious seats now that they have to live with them on a daily basis. I am perfectly happy with our seats in the sti. But I am a bigger guy. 6'0 230. And I didnt like the recaros one bit when I sat in them.

Of course the seats were uncomfortable. He is like 8% of the cars curb weight. I weigh 175 and fit perfectly in the Evo. The seat bottom was a bit undercushioned, IMO, for long drives, but the seats were perfect for radical driving.

Go sit in the '04 WRX and see how much you like them. My '02 WRX seats weren't necessarily snug, but I had no complain about them. I made some extra bolsters to use in auto-x. The '04 WRX seats are worthless. They belong in the Forester. They may as well have put a bench seat in it. If the STi is like that, I will be searching every junk yard for a MY02-3 WRX to snatch the seats, since I won't be able to afford the JDM ones anytime too soon.

Don't worry, they'll be about 500 people here willing to do a direct trade I bet... you won't have any trouble getting those seats if you want them.

The 04' Seats are just like the US Spec STI seats with different color and materials. I sat in them and it feels like a couch compared to a driving seats. The lombar support is too high for my lower back and the top part is too deep for my upper back, and seats are too wide. They are good for putting a 20" TV on it though.

JDM seats are perfect for me, they are snug and sporty looking. 02' Seats are not that bad, good for medium build people.

I'm 168lb 5'10"

Are they bleeding in your current WRX? The 02 and 03 seats are fine enough for daily driving. The '04s are very wide, way too wide for who I believe will be the prodominate buyer.

Since it seems that the '04 USDM STi seats are no narrower than the Greyhound bus bench seats that are in the '04 WRX, has anyone ever had a car seat reupholstered to add to the bolsters? This sounds a lot cheaper than new reclining seats. Plus you can keep your airbags.

Wow, we ARE all shaped so differently.

I LOVE the Recaro seats in the EVO and I sit deep in the back of them and they hug my shoulders very well and very comfortably. I am broad shouldered.

But, I really like the 02-03 WRX seats as they have great grip for sport driving and plenty of pad for long distance comfort. I don't like the new WRX seats as they feel too small in the seat and the thigh bolsters have almost NO pad and the metal supports dig into my thighs. The 04 seat backs feel just fine and feel the the 02-03 seats.

This is all very strange. People like the 02-03 seats but feel the 04's are too wide? I'm opposite I like the 02-03 seats and feel the new seats are narrow at the seat and lack padding.

Very weird. IMO, the WRX, STi should have the EVO Recaro's with added adjustable
side and thigh bolsters. Adjustments are the way to go as we obviously don't come in the same configs.

As an '02 WRX owner, I'll happily swap seats with any STi owner who finds any evidence of kidney bleeding... or frequent urination for that matter

Oops, I must apologize about most of the comments I made about the 04 WRX seats. I sat in one at the dealership with plastic completely covering the seat. So, while wingling in the seat to feel for the support, I was apparently sliding upon the bolsters. I sat in onw again today without the plastic, and at the thighs, the seats felt the practically same as the '03 seats. I measured both. The seat bottoms and hip bolsters were same distance apart and pretty much the same design. The back support area measured the same too. However the '04 was an inch wider at the ends of the torso bolsters. This makes it easier to reach for something behind the driver's seat and front passenger seat, but does allow a bit more torso sway. I could live with these seats in STi, but if I can find a good upolster without spending too much, I'll have the driver's seat altered.
