God do I miss them!
My current performance car is a '90 Escort with 50K on it. My gramps gave it to me a few months before he passed away.*sigh* Damn I miss him.
OK, back to topic.
This baby has one of the most feeble ATs I've ever driven. When you floor the pedal at about 60KMH it takes about 3 seconds to gear down and even then the sound of the poor old four banger is enough to let up on the gas.
With a manual, I am always entertained. I'm not into blazing through traffic at knuckle-head speeds. When yer a great driver, its the morons that prod along in la-la land that you gotta watch out for. Back in the day when I had my silver 82 Prelude (below 100HP) I could still work that tranny and keep the 10ft/lbs of torque in the sweet spot.
For me the 1st, 2nd, 3rd gear take-off is fun enough. Now being a perfectionist(not recommended), I strive for perfect shifts like Uday Hussein strives to get f'd up while 'ol dad gives him 100 gold plated AKs for a present. If I put the gas down too early or lurch the car, fellow motorists with good hearing will think I'm a nutter. I love cursing myself very loudly.
Manuals also make you more aware of what's going on around ya because waiting for that exact moment to drop a gear and leave a convoy of SUVs behind is so engaging. Hell, I just love going around cars and weaving through them. (normal commuters - "Oh my honey, that guy is so dangerous weaving in and out like that. Those damn "street racers" are going to kill themselves."
Me- "I'm going 60kmh lady. Just because someone wakes you out of your daydream or interupts your cell conversation doesn't mean I'm crazy."
And the clutch pedal! I'll tear up my license if this becomes a thing of the past. I love BMWs (M-cars to be specific) and when I walk by one and check out the tranny I actually get upset when I see SMGs or auto boxes on the normal models. "What a waste" is usually my reaction. I like Merc AMGs but would never consider one due to the auto-only offering.
disclaimer - peace to all with ATs. We all have our prefrences and I don't think anything less of y'all.
In conclusion, I like to be in control in all aspects of life and a manual tranny is essential to my driving pleasure. When I get my REX I think I'll be smiling for years, even when waiting to merge onto Lions Gate. The most HP I've ever experienced was my boss' MINI Cooper S. If the REX is anything like that, driving will once again be a pleasure...er...make that a passion.
Peace to the Van-Crew and to all our fellow Canadians and our American and British bros as well. We're blessed to live in countries where we can enjoy all that technology has to offer. May no envious, jealous, moronic people do harm to yer rides or to you and yours.
- an open twisty road, void of traffic, is a gift from all those who came before us. A special moment sent from above by our car crazy ancestors.
- Really New Testament, Driveus The Scooby, chapter 227HP, verse 1.
I'm warming up to this wee fella
