i was thinking about this also. i also have a sony vaio that uses as 19.9 volt charger. it seems silly to go from dc to ac to dc. is there a way to get at 19.9 v charge out of my car?

50W = the approximate power consumption of your laptop power supply (look on its underside - all the info should be there).

None.
Get a car adapter instead, hard wire it, and keep the wall brick at home.
You have to understand the electrical absurdity of going 12VDC->transformer to get 120AC->transformer to get 24VDC or the like.
Silly and inefficient.

hmm.. i think i'm starting to understand what you're saying. but the thing is... the power inverter's purpose isn't 100% for the laptop computer. it will be mainly used for the laptop... but i will also be using it for other things. that is why i wanted to buy the power inverter.

in this case... would 50W be sufficient as 2OHOH2WRX says?

As noted above, the power supply rating on your notebook and/or brick will tell you what you need. It will say something like Output 28VDC 1Amp.
If it doesn't give Wattage
Watts=Volts * Amps
So 28W.
50W should be enough for the notebook.
What else will you use the inverter for?

If you really want an inverter, get a nice 150W one and hard wire that too along with a hardwired notebook power adapter.
Then you will have a nice clean setup and not have to drag your power brick around and you can use the inverter and the notebook at the same time(power bricks tend to cover the other sockets on power inverters when plugged in).
BTW many power inverters are noisy which may affect you when on.
Buzzing in the stereo kinda thing.

I highly recommend installing an inverter. I put a 750watt in for the stuff I'm doing with my car. I mounted it on the underside of the rear deck and you can't see it at all. I've got 2 outlets under the passenger seat and 1 under the driver's seat.

Give me a few minutes and I'll be back with pictures..

Edit:

Back with pictures, keep in mind its not even close to being finished since I'm still figuring out where I'm going to fit all the stuff I'm adding Oh yeah, I used very short self tapping screws to mount it to the deck. If you do that, make sure you put some sealant on the screw so rust doesn't start forming around the screw:

Its not being held up by the zip tie, thats to hold the remote wires I had to add. This inverter was a throw away from a friend's van install, he got a much larger one (5KW pro-sine or something).

Another shot

You can see it is bearly visable from almost level, you can't even see it from standing height.

Yes I know, my trunk is messy. Its not finished

how do i hardwire the power inverter into the car? it comes with a cigarette plug adapter and that's it. what should i do? cut the cigarette plug off and split the wires? one positive one negative? if so, where do i connect the positive and negative wires?
