I ordered a Cobb catback exhaust and will be installing it today. Is it possible to just raise the rear of the car (via ramps) and be able to install the catback? The muffler itself looks easy enough, but it appears like I'll run out of headroom once I try to work with the intermediate pipe. Also, what's that funny looking shield thing on the intermediate pipe? It's not a cat... it looks like it's totally separate from the mid-pipe. Can I just un-bolt it and get rid of it?

i drive an 02 rs aswell, you are correct it is not a cat it is a pre-resonator chamber. it certainly looks like a cat though doesnt it!!! it is actually part of the midpipe, so when you pull the midpipe down you will be getting rid of this. then just bolt the cobb up! and have fun and listen to the scooby goodness.

Thanks Pat. BTW, would you (or anybody else) have a picture from below your car with your cat-back installed? I was really thrown off by that "chamber" and would like to see what it looks like when it's gone.

sorry i do not have a picture of the catback installed, i can try to get one for you tonight though,
here is a shot of the midpipe uninstalled from an 02rs. this person uninstalled a cat too.. The flange is on the left side of the shot just behind the "real" cat, which you can see has the red wire with the 02 sensor on it, it is just before the midpipe. then you have that silver, "cat-looking" pre-res chamber, then the cylinder is the resonator. you will be removing the midpipe... ie.. everything from that first flange to the right. i hope this helps clear things up. now with those things gone its just a straight "sorta straight" pipe back to my scoobysport backbox. ill try to snap a pic under my car when i get off work, i gotta get my friends camera though Pat |

Thanks again... you've been most helpful! That wannabe looking cat section really confused me.

OJL,
thanks for bringing this topic up. I have an 02rs also and currently have the Borla headers in K&N filter. I'm thinking of getting the Cobb cat-back, but was told that I may have to wait 1-2 months. How long did it take you to get yours? I guess something that many people have asked, how loud is it? I know its resonated, so it should be quiter than the Borla and Stroumung. Thanks |

Kucheto,
I ordered my catback from Cobb at the beginning of April. They said that their exhausts were backordered for 2-4 weeks; however, I only had to wait 10 days till they shipped it out. If you act now, they may still have some in stock. So, as of yet, I have not received it; but according to UPS, I should be receiving it tonight or tomorrow. The reason I went with Cobb is because I hear a lot of good things about their products, and Josh and Trey seem nice enough and are very knowledgeable. Also (despite what the forum consensus is), there are very few exhausts that are a direct fit for 2002/2003 RSs. I heard a sound clip of the Cobb exhaust, and it sounded very nice (pretty similar to the Stromung). I'd post the sound clip, but I have no idea how. I'll let you know how it sounds once I install it. o.J. |

OJL - thanks for the quick reply. Looking forward to sound clips and what you think about the exhaust as a $ value and hp gain. |

Pat L.I. - I've had the Borla headers for about 3 weeks now and they are going to a stock cat, no cat-back exhaust either, no CAI, just K&N drop-in filter.
I haven't had time to reset the ecu since then, but the sound is noticable from outside even with the stock exhaust. From inside the car sounds just a bit louder at higher RPM, but its berely noticable. As far as performance gains, again, I haven't reset the ecu yet, but IMO the car pulls better/stronger when it hits 3500rpm on up. |

Just installed it last night... quality and fit are perfect. Here is a pic before I installed it. As you can see, the muffler section has 2 front hangers, so it will fit both GC8 and GDA RSs. The sound is GREAT... not too loud, but by no means quiet. Definitely loud enough to annoy the neighbors and intimidate rice boys. Worth every penny. As far as power gains... this might be totally mental, but it feels like it pulls to >80mph much easier. No loss of low-end power to speak of.

that sounds awesome...i have a question for the rs'ers...do you feel with the awesome sound that some exhausts produce...do you think yer car is badder than it is...like it sounds so good i can beat anything (giving the illusion of being a bigger engine)...even though you know its not able to...just wonderin and hoping i dont make that mistake |

Cobreth - thanks for the pics. The exhaust looks awesome. I've looked at some pics of the Brullen and I think the Cobb actually sits better - flushed with the back bumper and even tucked in, just like the stock.
On pics you have the mid-pipe looks resonated and I think that's how its supposed to be. I think I'm just gonna order one tommorow and stop torturing myself. How recent are these pics? Imprezive2002 - did you have your cat-back custom made? Can we see what it looks like? thanks |
