Default UTEC knock correction

I just received the UTEC in and I'm getting knock. I've never messed with an user tuneable program, so I'm basically a newb here. My question is, the UTEC always pulls timing around 6000 RPMs in 3rd. This is where the CEL starts blinking and the car sorta bucks, correct? My question is, can I just keep the pedal to the floor or do I have to let off? I usually let off, but I was talking to another UTEC user and he said he just keeps it floored. Also, how do you go about fixing this problem? My mods are as follows:

VF 30
uppipe
downpipe
rear section
STi injectors
UTEC
walbro fuel pump

I am on the stock airbox with stock air filter and silencer removed. I'm also on the stock midpipe (the one w/ resonator, not the one with the cat. I'm catless). I have a HKS downpipe, a stock pipe, and a blitz rear section. Will replacing the stock midpipe and stock filter help me out tremendously? Thanks in advance.

Before tuning away, you should try to add some octane booster(toulene) or try a couple gallons of race gas mixed in with your normal brew. Under most circumstances the base map should be ultra conservative and rich. That could rule out some bad gas.

Oh and NEVER just push through knock, it's not going to go away by going faster

If you were to post your log, it would be helpful.

Your car could be at it's knock limit on 93 octane. First try a different brand of gas (I'm having good results with QT). Boosters WILL help, but running the too much timing will always result in knock on pump gas. Even if the AFR was a perfect 10.8:1, you'd still need to pull boost or pull timing to have it dialed in knock free. You're limited by the fuel. Toluene gets expensive. Running too rich can also induce knock.

Where do you live?

Your fuel might not be as good as what Turboxs tunes it for, even if it is conservative. I am hoping you have a laptop so you can see what the problem is. Your friend that just keeps his foot down when he gets knock instead of fixing the problem is not very bright. Classic example of why the utec is not for everyone.

Please Post some logs.

I'll get some logs on later tonight. I'm at school right now and have to study for a test.. but instead I'm on here, LOL. I'm located in TX, and I had Chevron gas but now I use Shell. I'll try to throw in an octane booster later tonight. Anyone have some they recommend? My laptop keeps dying on me so I haven't been able to get an consistent log.

I've been meaning to hook up a wideband up to the car but I haven't had the time.. it's finals. But I'll get those logs to you guys to see what's going on.

Another question, under the boost log, it says like 45.3, or 44.7, how do you read that?

What is the boost measured in? I'm hitting 1.2 bar tapering down to 1bar in 2nd, 1.3 bar in 3rd, and I haven't gotten it to redline. But in fourth, I'm hitting 1.4 bar! I have no idea where to get started on tuning this, so anyone that has any suggestions, I'm all ears! Thanks

33 on the knock count??? Did you hear anything? If that was real knock, it should have been audible.

The boost is measured in PSI, BTW.

OMG.....

Let me just point some stuff out....

Your 4750 100% map is at 15 degrees advance?!? and then you jump to 23 degrees advance at your 5000 100% column?

SMOOOOOOTH transitions... your asking to blow through a gear like that...

6373 +18.0 4.5 97 100 00 rich +22.1 100.0 +25.0 -5.1 42.30 4.2

6587 +18.6 4.5 98 90 00 rich +22.1 100.0 +25.3 -4.6 42.30 4.3
99% of your problem is that your trying to achieve the IMPOSSIBLE... don't let anyone tell you other wise.

You CAN NOT properly support almost 19PSI!!!!! on 93 octane, and run more then 21-23 degrees of advance. 100 octane... sure.. hell.. 100 octane you could run 30 degrees of advance at that boost pressure at redline (your injectors are a different story).

TurboXS tapers off their map after 5500-5750 down to around 16 PSI... that is more realistic on 93 (especially in metropolitan areas) and running 25 degrees of advance.

You sir, are on your way to crushing a bearing, or cracking a ring land... IMO, I'd have someone tune the map for you, or at least coach you as you go along.

This is the TXS stage 4 map. I haven't changed anything at all. All I've gotten are you guys pointing out the mistakes, and no one has even begun to offer to help me out here.

Jorge, I appreciate your comments and forewarnings, but how do I get started in fixing this? The nearest dyno is 6 hours away from me. The boost gauge says it's only boosting 1.2bar. Where is boost located in the log? I thought it was second from the last?

Also, in that log where you noted that timing went from 15.0 to 23.0, that's because a few RPMs earlier I had a count of knock, so I'm assuming that the car was still pulling timing and then stopped. Look closer before the 15-23 transition and you can see the count of knock present.

Step 1; Turn down the boost to the 17psi the map is tuned for
Step 2; remove 1 degree from the 90% load zone
Step 3; remove 2 degrees from the 100% load zone.

Mix and enjoy cold served with a tasty side salad.

Boost is the second column right after the rpm. You are running over 19 psi. turn down your abc and follow Nathans advice.

LOL, thanks for the comment Nathan, I needed a good laugh.

A quick question. Do I remove 1 degree of timing from the 90% load zone across all RPM ranges?

Nathan,
I did what you suggested, and now, instead of knocking at certain points, it just knocks constantly. I even pulled more timing and it just seemed like it got worse as I pulled even more. I don't have to mess with fuel?

Another question. When I put in race gas, what do I have to change to make it run more efficient other than upping the boost? Thanks.

If its knocking constantly, I hope you're not driving it. Have you seen what pistons look like after mild detonation? How about severe?

Check this pic, its borderline disgusting:

Looking at that makes my stomach turn.

I got it down to no knock whatsoever, then the weather went from 70s to the 90s and now it's starting to knock again. I just turned the boost down a little and it's running okay now.

Yeah that picture is pretty disgusting. I've heard some say that when you run too rich you knock, does that still damage the pistons?
