Default Super-Size Hood Scoop: Flutter?

Just how much does the USDM STi hood scoop vibrate/flutter at highway speeds?

It would be a bummer if our shiny new $31.5K cars appear to have a hood made out of thin cardboard - hopefully it won't also resonate at an audible frequency.

I don't suppose anyone has video of this effect...

TIA,
kenzo

The lightweight aluminum scoop is attached to lightweight, thin aluminum hood. In fact, the entire hood is going to shimmy a bit, hood scoop or not, especially at the speeds the STi generates.

Cheers,

Paul Hansen

I've been driving a 2002 WRX sedan for the last couple years and have never noticed any shake at all from the standard (much smaller) WRX scoop.

I'm not too concerned about STi hood shake at triple-digit speeds, but if someone ( certainly not me! ) typically commuted in the 75-90 mph range, would there be an "annoying" amount of shimmy?

(I expect you all to know exactly how much will "annoy" me.)

Thanks for the responses so far,
kenzo

At, um, 100mph, there isn't an annoying amount of shimmy (don't ask me why I know that)...

Cheers,

Paul Hansen

When you start doing 135+ in the WRX, there's slight visual fluttering. I think there were reports or scoops flying off on earlier builds of WRX overseas. Hope the STi don't flutter until at least 150.

Nimrod:

1.) 98-01 Impreza 2.5RS's had steel hoods, so that kills the comparison.

2.) '04 STi's hood scoop is MUCH larger than any other Subaru hood scoop, so that kills your credibility.

Thanks for posting...
