Post Why is my car dying on startup?

Sometimes when I startup my car it will idle so low it dies. And then other times it will go to 1500 RPM and stay there. What the hell is going on? It is driving me nuts. Should I do a ECU reset?

That was my first thought, but when I read his post it sounds like it's an intermittant problem.
Does it only happen when it's cold? Give us a little more to go on man!

This happened to my 00 BRP coupe, too. Only for the first month or so... doesnt do it anymore. I think the factory set engine parameters needed some actual driving time to be reprogrammed (you know, like an ecu reset, only much slower). You might want to try and reset the ECU.

This happens to my 2001 every few weeks or so. Only does it on a cold start. It's ussualy in the 30s to 40s out when it happens I think. Once I start the car up again it's fine.

Well...it happens when it is cold outside. And when it is nice outside. When it has been running for a while and when it hasnt ben running all day. Its crazy. I did a ECU reset back when I got a Ganzflow CAI not to long ago. I just put on a new muffler too. Gonna do a ECU reset and check that vacuum hose that BMW boy is talking about.

mine only does it if... 1 it's pretty cold out, say sub 20 degrees, and if I leave some accessories on. I think it doesn't have enough juice in the batt to keep it all going right after a cold start. Just my 02.

My car does this, too. It will start up, spin at about 1500rpm for a second or so, then die. Then I'll start it up again and it'll be fine. I haven't noticed any other problems with it. When I take it in for the first oil change I'll ask the dealer about it and see if they tell me something besides "It's that intake you have on there."

Ya. I do believe I will go get some platinum Bosch sparkplugs and a new battery soon. This is driving me nuts. And is very embarassing. I dont like to have to rev my motor up on stratup to keep it going. That and my exhaust is loud as hell. I am sure the other people in my apartment complex hate me. I work and clean my car all hours of the day/night. And then I come in with stereo bumping and muffler rumbling all the time. Its a wonder I havent been evicted yet. Hehe. Thx for the input. I will do what I can and hope it fixes it. I am taking in my baby to have 2 dents pulled on Thursday at the dealer. Will have them look at it too. Hopefully they wont give me the "its your intake" BS too. Hehe I will let you all know.

TimCat - When it speeds up to 1500, that is the cold idle setting, that is normal. If you let it warm up without touching the gas pedal, it will drop back down to its normal idle speed. The stalling sounds like a ECU reset might be in order. When I first removed the silencer from my car I only removed the positive lead from the battery to reset it, and it ran kind of funky after that (i.e. stalled and sputtered every now and then) I did a full reset by unhooking both positive and negative leads for 1 hour and since then it runs like a champ and seems to have a little more power and gets a little better gas mileage.

I was thinking it had somthing to do with the fuel pump or fuel related. If it was a fuel problem I wouldn't have a clue how to fix it anyways. Hopefully it's just the battery though. Would I need a bigger battery if I wanted to add a few more fogs?

Thanks,
D

Well I reset the ECU and my car runs alot better! But I need time to see if the startup problem persists or not. I guess we will see.
