Default my first CEL- but i have stock intake and all my cats, hmm?

hi,

this morning it was raining and went into the car and started it up fine. 30 secs after the start the CEL light goes off and i haven't yet backed out my driveway.

i have the stock intake. took off the silencer and scoop (intake silencer mod). still running stock panel filter. i have all my cats. i have a hks carbon ti cat back, thats about it.

3000 miles ago i had an injen intake and hks bov. took that off and reseted the ecu. ran 3000 miles wihtout a cel until today. ran 20k+ with the intake and bov wihtout a cel.

any ideas to my cel problem? should i clear it or have it checked out? i still have to bring my car for a 30k mile checkup, can they check it out there?

thanks for the help,
chris

You should definitely get it checked - otherwise you may never know what it was - or you may find out the hard way by winding up at the side of the road somewhere far from your driveway.

I don't know if you can get the EGT CEL before the car is warmed up, but it seems pretty common for the EGT sensor in the uppipe to go. I just pulled mine and did the resistor mod after getting a CEL for high EGT a couple of times, and I've only got around 12K on my car. I have an EGT gauge and I was at ~575 degrees C crusing at a steady 70 mph on a flat stretch of freeway when it happened the last time.

I also had a random misfire CEL several thousand miles ago.

They can check it when you bring the car in for service, only takes a sec.

I know it sounds trivial but did you check your gas cap?

thanks for the advice.

i haven't cleared the cel because like SFastWRX said i may never know what it was. and yes my gas cap was closed, heh. i will probably end up pulling the code when i get my 30k mile checkup done.

hope its nothing serious, i mean the car still drives like it always has. was driving it pretty hard on the way from work today, driving it hard like i do every friday. still feels and sounds good.

MOst autoparts stores will pull the code for you at no charge. Then you can match the number with the online database.

Its most likely nothing to be concerned about but you will benefit from knowing what it is. I would definately pull the code. The light can illuminate for many reasons, some completely meaningless and others catostophic.

A customer of ours had a WRX that threw a CEL every tank of gas for many months. As it turns out the WRX gives the vaccumm system a diagnotic every time the gas tank hits a certain level of fuel. Each time that diagnositc was ran my the car would sense a loss of vaccumm and illuminate the CEL. He would go get it pulled and each time they would stress the importance of closing the gascap. Well after getting the same code pulled about 5 times, they finally check things over and as it turns out there was a vaccumm hose near deep inside the engine bay that had slipped of its fitting. They plugged her back in and it never happened again.

Good times!

hello again,

well i've been driving with my cel light for about 2 weeks now. my car still drives normal. but today was slightly different. driving home from work and boostin in 3rd gear my cel light started blinking. as i stopped at a red light it kept blinking for about 15 more seconds then stopped blinking. continueing my spirited drive home i never encountered the blinking cel light again, but my original problem of my cel light being on is still there. weird.

was doing a search and i ran through a few reads with the same blinking cel light problem. some say that the probe in the uppipe maybe going out, or causing the problem. i do have 30k+ miles on the car and maybe this is the problem. i also ran across a lot of threads with people with the same problem but had mods such as an uppipe or unichip. but i have no other mod on the car but a hks catback and intake silencer removal mod.

mystery continues, will probably get the code pulled in my 30k service, waiting for 33k so the new oil i put in at 30k will not be wasted, heh.

A flashing CEL indicates a real-time misfire, this is much more serious than a steady CEL which only indicates a stored code. You need to get it scanned ASAP.
Either find a local parts store that will do it (Autozone still does it free here but I hear they are charging out there), or ask in your local forum for help. Someone near you probably has a scanner and can check it for you.

wow thanks for the tip. didn't know it was that serious. i will probably won't wait until the 33k for the checkup. i will probably set appointment earlier, asap.

as far as pulling the code i tried autozone last weekend. gave them a phone call and said they no longer do it. but i'm pretty sure at subaru during the 30k check up they will help me out there. thanks again.

update:

my cel light has dissapeared. dont know why, just went away. i went from a solid cel light, to a blinking cel light, then solid cel light again, and today no more cel light.

today i had to go run errand early in the morning. warmed up my car as usual and my cel light still being on at the time. went on a 15 mile drive. as i arrived to my destination i had to wait in my car for about 10 mins. while waiting in the rain it went away. afterwards i took a trip down to san jose about a 60mile drive, and no cel. got home just right now which was another 60 mile drive, no cel anymore. just weird i think.

again my car is stock except for a catback and intake silencer mod, and car has been driving normal no matter if the light is there or blinking or not, heh. oh well, just weird i think.

would the cel light code still be stored even if the light has gone away?

thanks

I would still get the code pulled. I had a solid cel for a while, called up the dealer and they said bring it in. But by the time I got there ( 2 days later) the cel went away. But they still pulled the code and actually had to send off the ecu to be reflashed. Something about a parameter setting was wrong. It was the original 2002 settings. I guess they have done some tweaking and they put a new version on my ecu. I also had another cel come on and go away in about a day, and it ended up being a loose hose clamp on something like a fuel vapor return line. (I believe thats what the service manager said) So I would still get it pulled.

thanks for the tip.

yea i was originally wanting to pull the code anyway. so i'm assuming from the post before this is that even tho the cel light went away the code that caused the light is still stored.

If you get a cel, start up and turn off your car 3x without the problem repeating the CEL light goes off...but the code is still stored.

I've been getting a CEL under acceleration. The car seems fine and then when I punch it, I will get a CEL. Today, I got a blinking when I stabbed it in first gear and then a solid CEL when I did the same thing in first. I also got a solid CEL a few times when I simply started the car. Always went away after a few starts and stops though. All I have done is a catless up-pipe and the EGT resistor mod. Any ideas? JC

Just got back from the dealer. The code was a P0301 - Cyl. #1 missfire. Like I said, I have 32,000 kms on the car and have had a catless up-pipe since about 18,000 kms. I got a CEL for the first time a few weeks ago and figured my EGT had gone so I did the resistor mod. Then, I kept getting a CEL but it would go away and come back at random. I didn't figure it was serious as it always went away after 3 starts/stops. On two separate occasions, the CEL came on immediately after ignition and then went away after three more on/offs. Then today, a blinking CEL under acceleration and a solid CEL after that. Dealer tech thinks it might be the coil or the plug in cyl 1 (I hope so). Any ideas what my problem is? Thanks, JC

I have a theory... tell me if you think its valid... I think my EGT went bad and then during that period the ECU may have been dumping extra fuel to compensate, which may have fouled the sparkplug in cyl 1. Is this plausible? JC

i'm assuming you still have the stock plugs...mine did funny things around 30, so i just replaced them, but they never gave me a CEL, just didn't like the performace.

i don't think the EGT has anythign to do with fuel, unless it goes low(high resistance gives low current, which means fire) then it cuts fuel. when it does not get hot enough, it goes high current(low resistance) and you get CEL because the cat is no hot enough to work right.

when i went catless, i did the resistor mod for the UP, i had CEL that would go on and off all the time(rear O2). well, the other day it came on and never went off....so i checked it. now i have both the 0546 and 0420....and i have had the resitor in for the 0546. maybe it came loose or something, but if i can't get it to go away, i don't know what i am going to do because it appears the resistor is not working for me. i know i need the MIL for the rear cat, but i can live with a light that goes off and on, as long as it stays regular.

Before I put in the resistopr mod, I got a solid CEL that wouldn't go away on its own. I put in the resistor mod and then it went away. Now I get this 0301 missfire code that seems to come and go at random but has come on a few occasions under load. Therefore, I have to question whether my EGT is even bad or not. Once I get this 0301 figured out, I'll take out the resistor just to see if I get a CEL again.

I'm guessing my 0301 problem has to do with the coil, the spark plug or the injectors. Most likely the spark plug or the coil (I hope).
