Default cop nailed me... something I need to get use to?

Two days ago on i95 south near Milford CT a cop tailed me 7 exits, a few feet from my bumper. I pulled off the highway, the cop followed me off the exit in Fairfield. I took a left at the end of the ramp (nice and easy) and the cop went straight back on to i95 south. I should have took that more to heart.

Late last night I was going 50mph in a 45 (Middletown Ave in North Haven). A car pulls up behind me and gets right on my tail. I say to myself, who is this jerk think he is. I drop the car into 4th gear and stepped on the gas, pulled away from him, and stayed about 70mph for a half mile before I took a right to head home (I hate tailgators). The car speeds up, follows me on the side street, and flashes his lights... NAILED... it was a cop. He got out of the car, asked for my papers, if I was drinking (I wasn't), ect. He goes back to his car and I wait 10 mins. He comes back and asks me "why were you going so fast". I wanted to spit at him cause I knew he tricked me... and I fell for it. I told him... exactly... "I know this is going to sound stupid, because it is, but I have only had this car for 3 weeks and I just got excited... and stepped on the gas, it is my 1st new car." I guess he believed me (cause it was the truth), he held a temp registration in his hand.

He gave me a minor infraction for speeding, $75 ticket, and gets back into his car. To add insult to injury, while I was putting all my paperwork back into the glove compartment, he slowly pulls around me, gets along side of me at a crawl... then SLAMS on the gas and speeds away in a nice cloud of dust that covers my car.

This is my first speeding ticket in 9 years. My last car was a 93' sc1 and I drove that car simular to how I drive now (except that car has nowhere near the power so it took a lot longer to get to speed).

Something new for me to get use to I guess, fast car gets A LOT of attention.

Careful all!

~Mike

P.S. I am fighting the ticket... I need to save the points on my license for later

p.p.s. don't fall for cop tricks like I did! He was so close to me, with his headlights, I couldn't make out it was a cop till it was too late!

IMO the cop would have stopped you for that behavior regardless of what you were driving. Maybe the fact that you're driving a wrx prompted him to get on your tail in the first place, but I would bet you did something prior to get his attention. I've been driving my wrx in CT for over two years (with a noisy exhaust) without talking to any law enforcement.

Hummm... well I don't have an emmisions sticker on my car yet. It was really late, about 1am when I got pulled over. I have been in an 80s rock mood lately, it could have been the blaring sound of Guns and Roses "My Michelle". However I don't "think" I did anything wrong driving wise. I didn't run any stop signs or lights (not even a yellow).

I realize that, he bated me, and I was stupid enough to get tricked by it.

I cop did this to me once, I pulled over when the car got that close to me and got out to kick his @ss, I obviously backed down when a guy in a uniform got out of the car lol.
But he did yell at me for getting out of my car with a 6 cell maglight with intentions to crack heads

I've only had this happen to me in CT actually. And I did the same thing you did; nailed it and took off. Only to have blue lights flooding my rear view. So now I've just learned to let off the gas and slow the car down until the guy either gets pissed off and pulls around, or pulls me over for going under the speed limit. I have yet to get a ticket for going too slow. :P

Putting on my hazards always works for tailgaters. It says, "I'm not going any faster for you, so get over it and make your move away from me."

Never has failed for me.

Sorry to hear about your situation, but we live and learn (if we're intelligent enough, and you seem to be).

Ignore the preachy. You know what you did was dumb and have admitted it.

On rte. 2 in MA, at around 10PM on a saturday night I had a pig tailing me while I had my cruise set at 57MPH, so he tailed me for about 2 miles, then decided to slam on my brakes going down to 45 MPH, it must have scared him off because, he passed by me right after

just use windshield washer fluid spray next time. That'll deter tailgaters.

Slamming on your brakes will make you at fault if he rear-ends you. Yes, you could always say you saw something jump out of the woods. Courts/Magistrates will be wary of people who slam on their brakes because of a past insurance fraud scam.

I only know this because I had someone slam on their brakes in front of me for no apparent reason. I slammed into their rear quarter as I was trying to panic swerve around them. It was deemed my fault, and they got a new car. I got 4 points on my insurance for totalling a car. Two years later the decision is reversed as this person was part of an insurance scam, but do I get my money back from the increased steps? no. I get my steps reduced back to where they were the 2 years before the accident, not including the additional reduction I would have had for the 2 years.

I hate insurance.

Must be my age showing, I would just go back in the travelling lane and drive at speed limit.

I say contest it. I had a friend in a similar situation. He wasn't speeding untill a cop started tail gating him. Him and his lawyer, went to court, and basically pointed out, that he was driving normally, until the cop began to tail gate, which caused him to speed up. Basically that's what his lawyer pointed out to the judge in his questioning of the officer. In his case it turned out to be an un marked car.
Good luck.

Another fact to consider... Usually the only people on the roads at 1am are : 1) the drunks, 2) the cops. So, if your going to do something not-so-bright, 1am is not usually the time I would recommend it. In some regards I would say you were fortunate it was a cop and not a drunk, instead of a ticket the drunk could have crashed into you.

Ken, if you stopped driving around late at night looking for street racing action you wouldn't have that problem.

Very True, and that really sucks that happened to you, but I forgot to mention I couldent tell it was a statie at first, I just thought it was so bozo riding me 1' away from my rear bumper trying to race me or something, so what do I do? Go slower! Then I apparently got really white faced when I made out it was a cruiser after he flys by me. Ugh!

I should have probably taken my driving instructors reasoning when dealing with tailgators "Put your hazards on, or pull over and let them pass by"

There was no travel lane.

I mailed the ticket (contesting) the next morning so now I wait for my court date. I think I may have a bit of luck on my side because though he wrote the "posted speed limit" on the ticket he never wrote down how fast I was going in the "actual speed" box.

Live and learn I guess, I am not going to drop it to a low gear and speed off again. I will just drop my speed to 5MPH below the speed limit and tick whomever tails me off.

If someone is tailgating me I generally slow down, usually they get the hint pretty quickly. My brother had a friend in HS who was like 6'8" and was fairly... crazy. He once sat through an entire light cycle because when the light turned green the guy behind him was apparently in a hurry and hit his horn the second it went green, so he just sat there through the whole cycle. That sort of thing tends to work better than the finger, etc.
