Default So has anyone noticed the rubber seal on the oil filter being crushed after removal?

mine was, hence the slight leak

did you put the oil filter on with your hands, or did you use an oil filter wrench? or was this the first oil change from factory? sounds like the filter was overtightened.

Initially, yes it was a hand-tighten, then it had a small leak so I tightened it with a wrench.


I must have crushed it with the hand-tighten.

How do you put the filter on?
(i.e. Did you clean off the mating surface and then put some oil on the rubber seal?)

I made sure the mating surface was clean this time.

There was some gunk on it, ostensibly due to the leak.

Replace it with a new one, could be a manufacturing defect. The rubber seal should conform to the mating surface and stop the leak. Naturally, it should be compressed, but not crushed.
