Default I'd like to reiterate how much suck Subaru Paint has

I was driving up north to a meeting and my passenger door got hit with a rock from a truck.

Just from the noise I KNEW the paint would be chipped.

Got out, looked at the door and sure enough. No dent, no scratch, but two big paint chips.

My hood also looks like I spend time driving through a rock quarry.

The aggavating part is that I got my stock side skirts painted over a year ago and after the horrible winter we had with the salt, snow and rocks you'd figure they would be beat to hell.

Well they have NOT one single chip. None. Nada.

:monkey: Subaru paint.

I drove from CO to Atl in January and my hood looks like someone took a sand blaster to it. Damn you Subaru and you're cheap paint.

the hood is so freakin ass light too (aluminum) it just sucks. I have three DENTS along with paint chips from rocks hitting my hood. It looks terrible.

The doors are also light as hell too, watch out for people wearing belts or anything hard. My doors got dinged from people LEANING on them for christ sake...

i have a 99 rs and miraculously there is not a single dent anywhere on my beautiful scooby, but i am very cautious to the point of taking down the license plates of anyone who parks near me who doesnt have a nice enough car that they would already be watching out for their own doors.
the previous owner (who had it form new until a few months ago) had a bra on it though and im still trying to get little rust marks on the paint out (from metal strips in the bra) and the "IMPREZA" embossment off my hood.

I have the same problem...damn paint chips in the hood drive me nuts. The problem is that I'm a detailing freak...so looking at those damn chips make me ill. I'll have the car forever, so I'll get it repainted eventually anyway...stinkin' thin Subie paint (rant over).

I just learn to deal with it. Figure I'll get it re-painted at about 75k miles . . only 48k to go!

I don't know if it has been discussed here before but pretty much all new car paint's suck nowadays because they're using a thinner base. Go to Nissan, BMW, Honda, acura, and etc. message boards and you'll find a ton of posts about crappy paint.

my front bumper after one winter is covered in this white film where the clear coat took a beating from the salt and snow, everytime i wash my car i touch up atleast 3-4 new rock chips.. specially on the hood, and i get the ocassional stray chip on the doors, fenders, etc... this is the crappiest paint ive ever owned.. none of my hondas ever had this problem

If it's any consolation, when I looked at the 04's while I was in the UK, the clear coat looks to be a hell of a lot better. One other thing to consider, a friend of mine has a Forester that has done 45k miles, and there isn't a single chip on the bumper, hood, fender or indeed anywhere else.

Is Legacy paint any better? The point I am getting at is that it isn't inconceivable that Subaru kept the WRX pricepoint down by using lower quality paint...but the tooling costs may be prohibitive to do so.

It does suck though, if I keep my car past 3 years I will get it resprayed.

Ditto all above. I am at 50k miles and almost two years. Lots of hood chips and a few scratches/dings. Now, of course, our Xterra, almost three years old, has ZERO dents/dings/scratches! And my wife just parks it anywhere Nissan paint on the X is excellent. This is the red color 2000 SE.

to make you feel a bit better, we also just bought a pontiac vibe, its got 1800 miles on it and had to be towed in because the airbag was trying to deploy id rather have the chipping paint on my suby than the thought that the airbag is gonna clock me whenever it pleases

I haven't had a problem with chips or dings. I have had my 02 WRX since last August and I have just over 10K on it. But what does suck is the quality of the application of the paint across the bottom of the car, especially on the doors. Orange peel city and a couple of actual paint runs. Looks like Uncle Mo's fly by night body shop painted it instead of the factory. Stupid me didn't look close enough when it was still on the lot.

It's supposed to be textured along the bottom (apparently it helps prevent chips). .....although, it shouldn't have "runs" in it.

Threads like this don't come around enough, it's like we've all become accustomed to our crappy paint. Subaru needs to hear from us loud and clear that their paint is crap... make sure you tell your dealer how much you hate the paint, it will get back to them eventually. Being a detail nut myself, I really wish I had known how bad the paint would be. I love my WRX, but I certainly would not have bought black!!
