Default CEL: Code P0170 Fuel Trim Malfunction

Maybe some of you remember my friend's dilema last week... he needed a new coil pack.
well, he just threw another CEL, this time it's the fuel trim. i have no idea what that is, but the mechanic who checked it said that he'll have to get it replaced, and that it would also be a good idea to get the 02 sensor also replaced...
so, what does code p0170 fuel trim malfunction mean?
i think that's it for now...
