Default Just installed UTEC...got some questions...

Well I just installed UTEC and the install went great. Into my 2003 WRX with JDM up pipe and HKS down pipe with Blitz nur spec exhaust. I got the UTEC with a stage 2 map on it to run. Well, first I put it in...make a run, feels the same. Next I turn the boost one full turn.

Ran like a beast. Got on the highway to see what it felt like.

Well going into first my CEL started to blink so I shut it off. Did it about three more times to get a feel for when it did it.

Went to a parking lot and turned the boost down half a turn.

Still runs good.

I suppose I was having some detination because of my downpipe. Just wondering if it is safe to run my car like this, as long as I have the boost to under a bar (stock Boost Controller).

Also, my lap top didn't have the same COM port on it that UTEC comes with, so I got an adapter peice. Well it turns out that Hypertext can't connect to items through a printer port. So is there any other way to connect to UTEC to know how I am running?

USB to Serial adapter works for me. If you need more info than that, let me know and I'll give you the details.

Where did you pick it up at?

I went to best buy and all they had was little serial to big serial.

I know that's not the right term...but it works.

Yeah you should be able to pickup a USB > Serial port cable at any computer place. Did you ever find out what the CEL for ... was is for detonation because it was blinking? Isn't the UTEC suppose to prevent it especially since you're using the base Stage 2 from TurboXs? Did you get rid of the CEL? How much "whp" do you think you got out of the UTEC and does it really make that much of a difference?

I believe the CEL is for detonation. Just for the fact that it comes real fast and then goes away. Just a blink.

With the boost turned up you can really tell a difference, it's a really smooth ride.

I would think, hopefully, around 200 whp.

The blinking CEL is usually a misfire. It may or may not actually be happening. If it flashes at you, the UTEC is detecting detonation as you mentioned.

Well i called UTECh tech support about the CEL flashing and they said. That if the clutch slips it will flash the cel also.

Weird ... I've been looking at a UTEC for 6+ months however put it off for a while. I really don't want to deal w/ CELs so thus my concern for the question. Jimmy you should have way MORE than 200whp ... I'm running 213.2 whp w/ uppipe, downpipe, catback, and MBC @ 16psi.

Ya I noticed a big difference when i installed my Utech.

I don't really get and check engines lights at all and i have a stage2 kit It flashs now and then but it might be the clutch slipping or a misfire accurding to what Turboxs Tech people say!

I think its great i run at 16PSI at 3-4500 then 15psi at 5500

Its werid in second gear i get a max of 15.5psi but in forth gear i hit 16.1-5 PSI at full trottle.

I would say it has 226Hp at the wheels well this is what Turboxs is saying.....and 300 at the fly wheel!

So you say the CEL can be from the cluth?

If it is a detonation/misfire...will it hurt my engine bad? I can't feel it or hear it...just the CEL comes on.

How long have you been running UTEC Jimmy with the CEL lighting up?


*sigh* I can't wait to get an adapter so I can see what is going on!

For now I have it on the stock map...better safe then sorry.

Shouldn't make a difference at all........

1. Timing is not adjusted accordingly
2. Too much boost
3. Not enough fuel
4. All of the above.

It's easier for the turbo to maintain a higher amount of boost at slower climbing RPM's, i.e the faster your RPM's are the harder the tubo has to work in order to keep a higher amount of pressure consistant.

Today I am picking up the part for my computer, so that I can see what's going on. Hopefully if it's just that stuff I can add fuel/timing or take away fuel/timing in the right place and fix the problem.

Guess I'll see around noon...wish me luck, 'cause it'll be my first time tuning

I think you mis interpreted what he said - The Utec flashes the CEL when it detects knock (and it also pulls timing immediately). He didn't get a CEL from a code in the computer, as that would have stayed on.

Jimmy can I run you someday soon. I would like to do a few rolls in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. You have basically the same mods and I would like to see how much "power" you have now w/ the UTEC?

I'd like to run against you some time. Your car dyno'd slightly more than mine but I am utec stage 4 with a forced performance turbo. I am having doubts about my setup. Either the dyno at Knowledge is reading low or I need to get a different turbo.

A friendly challenge would answer some questions for me.

I can't tonight. I have to go to my kids preschool. Tommorow afternoon/evening would be better. I will be at knowledge perfomance getting a tune in the afternoon. Maybe we could meet there then head up 575.

When I had it tuned before I dyno'd at 209awhp. That tune was at 18.5 psi. I think that it is too much for the turbo so I am going to get the boost lowered and hopefully be able to run more timing. Either way the 209 is less than what you got.

I'll actually be busy w/ Home Group stuff tomorrow night and it's month end at work thus tomorrow is not good for me. Friday I have dinner and a concert w/ people after work so maybe Thursday night if you want? It's suppose to rain so it'll suck. I remembered someone locally w/ a Stage 4 pushing 250whp+? I was consistently getting 211-213whp w/ a uppipe, downpipe , catback, and MBC @ 16psi.

I'm not changing anything ... remember I still have the VIDEO. I drive like I normally drive. My parents even think I drive slow ... top speed I drive slow ... but getting from the 0/10mph > 5-10 above the speed limit is a whole other story.

Hey Guys,

I have a question too. I just installed my utec and got the car running. But I dont seem to have any boost. Well, it goes to about 10psi. then hit a cut off. Now 3rd gear goes to about 12psi, then the cut off.

Is this normal? I have the basic map that it came with but I am running everything that is in the stage 4 and I just installed a Greddy FMIC. I will put in a 4+ map when I too get the correct adapter, and have it tuned.

I just dont get why I am hitting only about 10psi. It should be at least stock boost levels...right?? What could it be? Is the ABC adjustable?

Please help

ps. I just got a solid CEL tonight, after driving the car all day (with NO CELs). I will check in the morning to see what code. Normal??
