Hmmm .. well I am not sure what you guys are doing .. but I would think the logical way to check your MPG would be to fill up your tank .. reset the trip meter ... drive until the yellow light comes on (usually have about 20 real safe miles left ... more than that city and you are really pushing it IMO .. heating up the fuel pump etc) go fill up your tank ... check the gallons that it takes to fill it back up and divide your miles on the trip meter by the gallons used.

IE 310 miles 13.8 gallons to fill = 22.5mpg

Any other way either makes no sense or is not very accurate.

Using just the odometer/trip meter and the fuel gauge, filling up the tank to the max capacity is necessary for a good estimate. However, waiting until the yellow light comes on is irrelevant.

As long as the number of miles traversed between "full refills" and the number of gallons are noted, the mpg number is numerically acceptable.

I say numerically because filling up the tank until the "top up" button releases doesn't guarantee a consistent "full" tank; perhaps some nozzles stop when you are about 0.1 gallons before full capacity, perhaps some other may be better or worse. It's also possible that the fuel meter (that says how many gallons you purchased) may be off; although there should be some legal repercussions for the gas station. And then, there's the issue of the odometer/trip meter not recording the amount of fuel you use for going in reverse, as well as incorrect tire pressure that makes the wheel circumference different from what the odometer thinks.

I have been averaging around 19-20, until I installed a shift indicator. I was amazed at how quickly I reach 4000RPM's, and would then shift at about 5500. With the shift light set to starting lighting up at 4,000 (bottom of the boost range), I now shift just before 4,000, or just after it (4,200). With that my gas mileage jumped up to 22MPG's (I still hammer it alot when passing).

I think one of the keys of better gas mileage is to remember that it is a 2.0 liter when not boosted, when the boost comes on you really have like a 3.5 liter engine, consuming what a 3.5 liter would under a wide open throttle.

Now with that said, ome of the best gas mileage numbers I have obtained are driving extended periods of time at over 80+ MPH's (on my way down to San Diego autocrosses). Now this has me somewhat baffled, since I know that 100MPH is 4K, in 5th gear. Perhaps I am keeping it at 90, which is the intermediate zone probably 0 atm. manifold pressure.

worst= 8mpg mostly city

best= 15mpg all highway driving

does not help that the engine is 5.9l v-8 pushing a 5500lb truck. All your mileage looks pretty damn good to me.

Best 31.11 - road trip (usually 28.5-29.5). Must've been a tailwind that day.

Worst 19.51 - city, lots of snow with stop and go traffic for a couple of days. Then when I had a chance, I was flogging it. "Woo-hoo!! I'm a rally driver!"

My tankfuls usually avg. 22.5 to 23.5 mpg.

Lol this is wrong :/

You fill up your tank top it off, and reset the trip odo to 0
When you fill up again, top it off and divide the miles on the trip(from last fill up to this fill up) by the amount of gallons you used.

So I have a full tank and 0 on the trip
Drive around for a couple days and I'm at 1/4 tank with 200 miles
I go to gas station with trip ODO showing 200 miles
Then I fill up, top it off whatever like last time
Pump says I used 10.000 gallons to fill it up

Divide 200 by 10=20mpg
