I voted for you to get a STI, Really it isn't even a hard choice. Go with the STI and keep your factory warranty. Plus get 6spd DCCD, and 2.5ltr. That you can't do aftermarket and keep a low cost. I think it is nearly $8k for a 2.5 stroker kit.
And if you want to upgrade why not start out with 300hp and go up from there.

yeah... it should be clear that you can not make a WRX into an STi with the difference in cost between the two. If you are going to spend that much money the STi is the better car to start from.

The price difference is larger than it appears. The STi has all of the performance goodies, but you're going to have to spend money on a radio/CD/Nav (whatever), no doubt an alarm system that exceeds the typical port installed WRX alarm, Winter (snow or all season tires and perhaps rims too) tires. The cost of installation (if one is not comfortable doing it themselves) of all things above, with the exception of an easy install of car mats.
The STi price with the things above installed is going to exceed $35,500.

i went through the same question with myself. i have a limited amount of money, with college and all. so i decided on the 04 wrx. just because the hidden costs of a sti. cause i have to add everything in the terms of a sound system. the alarm system, and also im only 18, so insurance will be a beast.

HFTURBO you talk about winter and tire and stuff. Unless you plan on driving with re92 for summer and winter and not get a ski rack for your wrx than you have a point, but i know with my rs i have snow tires and wheels and a ski rack. You can put snows on 17's, so the price is really not that much higher in that respect.

Also, even if the sti was 45000k you couldn't make a wrx with the price diff. 6speed, new dccd, suretrac, whole interior, avcs, new susp. geometry, not to mention all the body stuff, oh and the 2.5.

Of course you can make a wrx handle as well as or faster than an sti for cheaper, but it's not the same.

Get the STI

I'll have about 32k to spend in about January. I live in Houston so snow and ice are pretty far from my worries. I can get a clifford alarm for $100 and i would probably rip out the radio for an aftermarket one anyways. My girlfriends mom runs a embroidery company so i can get some custom floor mats cheap so i think i am going with the STi.

unless i waste my money on stupid crap i don't need.

Remember there's insurance, and the tires won't last forever!
Good Luck in January!... Oh, Houston... I remember all of those one way streets, missing a road sign and going in circles trying to find the way back to the road. That STi should be fun on those long straights between towns.
