Question I think my fuel guage is messed up...or fuel economy

About a month ago, I swapped out my tranny oil (its a MY00 2.5RS, manual) for Amsoil 75W90, hoping to get better fuel economy. And it actually helped! On my second tank of gas, I was getting 30-50 more km per tank...which is pretty good.

But then I was doing some basic maintenence and I reset the ECU, and ever since my fuel ecomony has been crap! I used to get at least 430 km per tank (I always check) and now the light comes on at 400km....for the past 2 weeks (actually, at 350km this week! )....so it seems that something is wrong.

Although, last week, my fuel light came on, and when I filled up, I only filled up 45 Litres (max is 60L)....usually its at least 50L when my light is on.

Think its a problem with the guage? Its giving me a premature empty reading. Seems to have happened ever since I reset the ECU.

try measuring your fuel economy more precisely:

1. Fill tank, reset trip odometer to zero.
2. When you buy gas, record the number of litres and kilometers
3. calculate (litres/kilometers)x100 = fuel economy in litres per 100 kilometers

repeat a few time and calculate an average

well, here we go

yesterday I filled up, 43 Litres (the light was ON for a little while too, should been empty), max is 60L

and from those 43 L that I used, I got 375 km

so thats 11.5L per 100 km

EDIT: ok, I calculated it at 20.5mpg (233miles using 11.35 gal)

anyway, I think my fuel economy is normal, its just my gas guage thats screwey..its telling me its empty about 10L too early!

I'm having the same problem. Its filling up at about 40L or so. I haven't done any mods to my car. I've been using SHELL gas and I heard that the fuel was screwing up fuel pumps and gauges. I'm bringing it to Subaru soon. Let me know if you hear anything.

yeah, the fuel sanders do go inaccurate after a bit... one of mine went around 130k miles...

They are a little easier to change on older legacies since the rear seats fold flat.
