What is sticking out of the hood of this rally car?

What's the black tube thing sticking out of the passenger side???

Air intake. Apparently there is some fairly deep water on that rally.

Must not be too deep... don't they normally run it up and over the roof of the car?

have you guys seen one of those German Lepard Tanks all sumerged only with it's snorkle system up? Now those are kewl!

They also use that sometimes on particularly dusty stages. It reduces the likelihood that dirt will get into the intake tract (even with a filter, too much dirt can cause problems).

That's a Scooby prepped for the Safari rally. There's alot of deep mud crossings and the snorkel helps it breathe better.

As Marquis said it also keeps alot of dust from getting in the intake track.
