Question Anyone install a Torque Chip on a MY98 L 2.2?

I'm running into problems installing a Torque Chip in my MY98 Impreza L.

Has anyone here done this before? I've printed instructions from Torquechip.com but the car just won't start.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
-Mike.

Are the instructions you have in pdf form or jpg?

email the pic or pdf of the installation instructions josh@surrealmirage.com

I'll compare the pinouts to what I have for my legacy....the pins are going to be different, but I can probably tell ya if something looks fishy.

Also, do you have an auto or MT?

Well.....assuming the wiring is 100% perfect, I would say you either have a bum chip, or possibly a chip that was meant for an automatic equipped car.

However i would still think the car would run.

First suspicion would be wiring......second would be the chip.

Just out of curiosity, what version chip do you have?

I've gone over the pinouts from my ECU and the wiring on the torque chip, and did the same for your car.

The wiring diagram Al has provided is correct. He doesn't have a box around pin 64 for the tach output.....but that shouldn't be a big deal.

You can find the pin-out diagram for your car here http://www.northursalia.com/m...ng/wiring.html

I would suggest you go back and double check all your wiring.

At this point, I definitely say it's either wiring (good chance) or chip is DOA (probably less likely)

Also double check you've hooked the ground up properly.

Not sure what version it is... I bought it used from Larry Ganz.

It is just a black box with a red LED on it... not like the one pictured on torquechip.com

I also wired in pin 64 (even though the box wasn't there in the instructions).

I'll re-check the previous connections this weekend, but I remember checking it mulitple times when it was wired in.

There may have been a loose connection on one of the wire taps though.

EDIT: I do remember that I tapped into a yellow wire with a green stripe (power I suppose) and cut a black wire with a yellow stripe as well as a green wire. I believe the other one I tapped into was purple but I'll have to check.

Thanks,
-Mike.

Checked the ECU pinouts in relation to the instructions for a MY99 RS and everything matches up.

I'm not sure what the vehicle speed sensor is however.

My car has no ABS therefore no front speed sensors... will this affect install?

vehicle speed sensors and ABS speed sensors are different.....they're actually tone sensors.

Does the red light come on when the ignition comes on?

Can you be a little more descriptive about the exact problems.

Does the car even turn over?

The red light does illuminate when the ignition is on.

The starter motor turns but it won't start... similar to what you'd experience with a bad fuel filter.

I tried starting it several times and the starter would just continue to turn with no indication that it would start.

I'm going to check my old connections again this Sunday.

You may want to try taking the chip out and see if the car starts....not sure how you did your wiring, and if that would be a major pain in the butt.

Oh, the chip is out already. I'm going to buy some bullet connectors for the two wires that need cutting so install and removal will take less effort.

The car starts right up without the chip.

I'll check connections again tomorrow and post my findings.

Thanks for the input/ feedback!

Update:

The chip wired in fine and is working great.

All of the connections are the same as the first time I installed it so I'm guessing that the ECU harness wasn't plugged in all the way.

Thanks for the assistance legacy777.
