A '97 GT has the DOHC engine which I believe takes 4.5 qts. The SOHC engine takes 4.2 qts. Both include the filter.

Just pour in 4 qts. and check it in a day or 2 and top it off if necessary.

It also depends whether it is manual or automatic. My Forester auto 2.5 engine takes .2 qt more than the manual.

That's for the 2.5 DOHC.

The 2.5 SOHC only takes 4.2 qts. w/ filter.

Well, my owner's manual says 4.2 qts. in two different places. That amount has worked for the last 2 changes. That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

Dave

P.S. BTW, the filter doesn't hold .6 qts if that's suppose to be the difference.
