Exclamation DRAGON Event Schedule

EVENT SCHEDULE

Friday, May 16

BE VERY CAREFUL ON THE ROAD. IF AN ACCIDENT IS GOING TO HAPPEN IT WILL PROBABLY HAPPEN ON FRIDAY. CAUTION IS THE BETTER PART OF VALOR IN THIS CASE. WATCH FOR WEDDING TRAFFIC AND ADRENALINE-RIDDEN SPORTBIKE RIDERS. BE VERY VERY CAREFUL.
  • All Day
Welcome info available at HQ Tent across from the General Store. Maps, etc. Maps will also be handed out at the bonfire.
  • 12:00noon -- Whitewater
Wayner has offered to take the early birds whitewater rafting. Those of us who are here early may wish to join him in some river fun. Bring sunscreen and meet at the Nantahala Outdoor Center (NOC). See their website for details... www.noc.com
  • Afternoon -- OWN DISCRETION
Many people will still be traveling, be very careful on the road and be considerate of other drivers. Do not let your testosterone be your guide.
  • 6:00pm-9:00PM -- DINNER
    location TBD, possibly Tapoco Lodge
  • 9:30pm-late -- BONFIRE
    introductions, welcome information, s'mores

Saturday, May 17
  • 6:00am-9:30am -- BREAKFAST
The hotel restaurant will be open for breakfast. Make sure you eat... you will get tired today.
  • 9:30am-10:00am -- STAGING
Gather at the Buffet House (Dragon HQ) across from the General Store, we will be leaving from there for the Cherohala/Dragon loop. Make sure you fill your gas tank before 10am
  • 10:00am-11:30ish -- CHEROHALA WEST
We will travel up US28 to the Crossroads, then down US129 to the Joyce Kilmer Forest, where we will cut over to the beginning of the Cherohala Skyway. We will be taking the Skyway west to Tellico Plains, TN where we will have lunch. Keep your head together on the Skyway, the potential for speed is very high and you will want to go faster. Think before you accelerate.
  • 12:00pm-1:00pm -- LUNCH
Lunch at the Tellihala Cafe in Tellico Plains. There are other restaurants nearby if we have overflow.
  • 1:30pm-4:00pm -- 2 OPTIONS
    A) Tellico North Loop - Run on fun back roads around to the north side of the Dragon, ultimately coming down across the Dragon from the north. Dragon runs ensue, be extremely cautious, there are idiots out today. Directions will be provided. Please be very careful as you approach the 4:00 hour, there will be extreme traffic at the Dragon overlook due to the wedding. Keep your speed down and have consideration.
    B) Cherohala Direct - Return across the Cherohala to US129 and Robbinsville. From there, take the Wayah Road (VERY FUN) southeast over the mountain to Franklin, NC and then north on NC28 to Fontana. This is the route that I (Porter) will be taking.
  • 4:00pm-4:30pm -- PICTURE STAGING
Please park off the ballfield, we will call you on by color to arrange the group for the picture. This will be fun, press may be in attendance. Rebellion (Eric) is our illustrious picture organizer. Thanks Eric!
  • 4:30pm -- PHOTO SHOOT
  • 4:45pm-6:45pm -- OWN DISCRETION
Some people will want a nap, some people will want to get another run on the Dragon before they eat dinner. Choose your own adventure. Those involved with the wedding will be involved. Get your meat/food from the Robbinsville supermarket during this time if you haven't already.
  • 7:00pm-9:00pm -- COOKOUT/FESTIVITIES
We will have huge grills by the Buffet House. Come cook up some food and bring your fixins. We will have some chips/etc there but you may want to bring a little somethin'. Those who bring beer to share will be extra welcome.. Jerry and Kristi will join us at some point depending on their plans.
  • 9:00pm-late -- BONFIRE
Day's review, storytelling, shenanigans, trash talking with biker types if they are available. Please refrain from making night runs on the Dragon, visibility is your key to longevity.

Sunday, May 18
  • 6:00am-10:00am -- BREAKFAST
    Hotel Restaurant
  • 8:00am -- MORNING SERVICE
For those who are so inclined, Wayner and Eric of Airborne Motorsports will be leading an informal morning service and time of devotion. Location is TBD and will be announced Saturday night.
  • 9:00am -- OPTIONS

[1] Own Discretion - This is your day.

[2] Maryville TN Autocross - Those who wish to stage a righteous Scooby takeover of the rural Maryville, TN autocross, please gather outside the General Store. The group will be leaving BY 9:30 to go to Maryville. The event is located at William Blount High School. It will take you an hour minimum to get there. Registration CLOSES at 11am and if you wish to compete you should be there well before that. Tech CLOSES at 11:15 sharp. Mandatory drivers meeting at 11:30am sharp. There is NO late registration. First car off at 12:00 noon.

[3] Gravel Run - This is a Porter special. Those interested in running some gravel at speed should meet with Porter at the Cabin Museum by the fire pit. Make sure your gas tank is full and your equipment ready. We will be exiting the back of Fontana Village directly onto gravel and going west to the Cherohala area. We will be running on the same road network as the Cherokee Trails ProRally. Please do not run on gravel if your car is lowered, you have summer-only tires (Falken, etc) or if you value your paint job above your fun. We have yet to have a car damaged on a gravel run, but everyone will end up with some minor paint chips, it's just a fact. Minimum following distance of 6 car lengths will be maintained. We will stop frequently. This trip is absolutely beautiful. The loop will take us to the midpoint of the Cherohala Skyway (all on gravel!) and then north on gravel to intersect the Tellico North loop from Saturday. We will loop around via highway to Maryville to watch the latter part of the autocross and cheer the victors.

** Both groups will return across the Dragon, minus the people traveling north immediately. It makes better sense for them to leave from Maryville.
  • AFTERNOON -- THANK YOU FOR ATTENDING! BE SAFE ON YOUR HOMEWARD JOURNEYS.

I feel like im on a cruise or something!

Actually for the past three years, I have done something "big" right this time of year... last two years was a cruise, this year....something even better.

I like how everything is laid out. My only problem is deciding when it's time to leave to come back home!

Update to a few points on the schedule...

We now have a time to meet at the NOC for rafting.

Wayner and Eric of Airborne Motorsports will be leading an informal devotional on Sunday morning for those who are so inclined.

Thanks!

Thumbs up

Gravel, gravel, gravel.

Oh, and the loop to Franklin. That rules and is more fun than the Dragon with less traffic.

i'm going to try and get outta here between 6 and 7 in the morning ... I hope I can make it there by 9:30 for the CHEROHALA run since I missed out on that last year. If I'm running late, hopefully someone will be around for me to know how to get out there.
