Question Scooby Newbie... need some advice please =)

Hey guys I am the proud owner of a 2000 Vette but I'm looking into buying a good used daily driver. I want to pick up a mid 90's Imprezza that is 5 spd manual, coupe, and AWD. I was thinking 94-96. My needs will be: future USDM or JDM WRX STi swap. I will need something fun to get me through the winter =). I don't mean to be a PITA but I have a few questions for you guys..
1. which midyear/trim level is best for my needs?
2. is the JDM or euro STi engine better? Bang for the buck?
3. Can I update the front and rear clips to 99-00 spec?

Thanks alot in advance

-Danny

P.S. if you are bored you can also tell me the approx cost of the swap and parts needed...and what makes it so difficult to do.

I can answer one of your questions.

You mentioned a "coupe" model, IIRC, there wern't any coupes made from 94-96, which the Impreza L/Brighton; all in 4DR. I might be wrong, but if I am I've never seen one sold. Not until the intro of the 2.5RS which does come in coupe. It's a 98-01 model year.

:game show buzzer: EEEEEEEEEEEEEEE :gameshow buzzer:
Wrong,
Coupes go back to 93' IIRC coupes were made specifically for the U.S market where buyers preferred 2 door's over 4 at the time.

You want a '96 and up. This gets you the 2.2 unless it's a Brighton. The earlier cars and Brightons are 1.8's and are dogs. You'll enjoy driving the 2.2 until you do your upgrades.
In '97 the Imprezas got the new nose with the different hood/grille/headlamp profile. An RS hood is a bolt-on for these. With a '96 and earlier car you need to change the lamps and grille for it all to work.
The ass-end of the car is the same, regardless of year.
If you want a lightweight car for a donor find one without sunroof or power windows. Makes a big difference.

The JDM vs Euro are almost identical. Well thats the base of coarse. Once you get into P1 its a different story. I say wait a year of 2 and wait for the 2.5L Turbo's become more popular as the forestor, and possibly the legacy will be armed with them stock!!!! Swap one of those in, it'll save you bundles, but if your an old dinosaur like me going for the purity of JDM; a nice V4 STi RA clip would cost about 10-12k's IIRC plus 1 or 2k to make it work.

I'd wait till the end of summer and pic a 02 or 03 wrx coming off a lease off a lease. spending the extra money now is probably cheaper and more reliable for any future boost work.
