Default Id like to say something regarding using magazines for benchracing

Ive seen a lot of this in the evo/sti debates, regarding proving which car 'handles better' by quoting skidpad/slalom tests.

Consider these things when you look at such numbers:

1. Tire plays a huge factor. Is it really meaningful if one car gets better skidpad numbers just because it comes with softer tires?

2. If the tests werent done in the same place at the same time they are meaningless.

3. Slalom numbers can be deceiving. Driver skill can play a role here, suspension adjustments that will make a car handle worse overall can make it peform better or easie to drive in a slalom.

That said, judging from how ive seen EVOs get around an autocross course, they probably WILL be better handling cars than the STI. Time will tell for sure though once some STIs and EVOs start showing up and racing =)

I agree 100%! Personally I look for the articles where several drivers take a few cars around a road course. They are hard to find, but most interesting. There was a good one in Road and Track (I think) where they took a Z06, NSX and a Porsche around a road course and three different drivers with different skill levels drove them all.

I will probably be out there in my sti(unless I am really dissapointed in the test drive) for the monthy subaru mitsu competion at the autox, of course Im not the best representative driver for the sti.

in this case.

as a diff example I had some guys come up to me when I had the M5 at the corvette autocross, and they were all saying "oh man this got better slalom speeds than a vette"

Im thinking "uh...dont think so"

they all thought that meant the m5 would handle better than a vette

I understand what your saying. If you just look at the evo one mag has it pulling .98g's on the skid pad and another mag tested it back to back with the sti on the same day and they both pulled .90 g's. There are just too many variables to accept magazine numbers as gold. When looking at magazines I only look at the general ideas such as in the case of the sti vs evo the evo is more predictable at 9/10ths then the sti and the sti has a better torque curve <-- no matter who test this they pretty much come to the same conclusion.

edit: also salomn speeds are horrible to look at since every magazine sets up the cones at a different distance some have 48mph as their high ever tested and others have 78 mph as their highest tested.
