Default What will fit in a 92' Legacy?

Sorry for the stupid n00b question, but someone i works with is getting rid of hers, and I'm looking for a project, so my question is:

What motor will fit into a 92' Subaru Legacy L Wagon besides stock? And what motor comes with it stock?

Thanks! and again, sorry for the stupid question.

Cj,
ImaN00b

Any of the EJ motors will fit. To include all of the JDM motors, except for the twin-turbo Legacy EJ20s. Unless your co-worker is selling a right hand drive 92 L (they made some RHD Legacies to be used as postal delivery vehicles), then the twin turbo will fit, too.

Not sure what motor the 92 L wagon came with. Either an EJ22 or an EJ25, I would think.

CjHermsen: An easy and fast swap would be a turbo engine from the same model legacy. 2.2 liter closed deck.

dsmawd: The ej25 didnt come out until 96, and they sucked with only 155 hp/.

The EJ motors are the motors Subaru used for the last 15 years or so. 1.8L, 2.0L, 2.2L, and 2.5L, all labeled EJ18, EJ20, EJ22, and EJ25, respectively.

The 2.2 turbo was only available in 91-94 Legacy's, I believe. The 92 Legacy you're talking about most likely had the non-turbo EJ22 (2.2L, ~130hp).

hijacking this thread a bit...

what year did subaru start using the twin-turbo motor in the legacy? would it bolt into a comparable MY USDM model...such as a 97?

The Ej18 wasnt used in the US until the 1993 impreza. All other 1.8 liter after 85 are EA82. The first EJ series engine was in the 1990 legacy, a ej22 2.2 liter. The ej18 was only available in the impreza, in 95 it also got the ej22. The legacy got the ej25 in 96 but it was weak. The impreza dropped the ej18 in 98 the same year that the 2.5 RS with the EJ25 came out.

the twin turbo ej20 was never used in the USA it was only over seas and came out in the early to mid '90s. to use the twin turbo set up you would have to make at least new up pipes, if not the entire exhaust manifold and intake plumbing. I have heard of atleast one person in the US doing it but I don't know who that was.

it's been done. PDM did it www.pdmturbos.com

The engine was supercharged & intercooled. The supercharger was unbearable, way too loud. I talked with one of the guys at PDM, and I think he said the owner took the supercharger off, or did some more tweaking with it, to get it to work right.

Here's proof
