Default Well My Strumong exhaust rotted out after....

only 2 years it would not pass inspection I'm kind of pissed that Cobb Tuning would put something so crappy on their cars. Well I haven't Called Cobb yet but I doubt they help me much. But come on it rotted out front and back after only 2 years and I live in a good climate (Virginia Beach as only had 3 snow storms in that time and I always keep the car clean top and bottom.

Well since I needed a good exhaust system and quick I ended up installing a WRX axle back muffler that I got for free. I had to clock the flange and install a new hanger. The nice thing is that I was able to clamp everything in place so I could put the replacment in the back of my Corrado and take it to the exhaust shop to get welded. I then installed it in 10 minutes.
here are pics of the wrx muffler on my RS:

Here are pics of the Modified WRX muffler next to the new Strumong muffler for the RS:

So did my Mild Steel one in two years. It rusted from the inside out. Definatly a design flaw if you ask me. There should be a weep hole in the back where the moisture accumulates. Mine wasn't from short trips either, I drive 35 miles to work one way.

I ended up getting a used ss stromung for a good price. So far so good with it.

Which is the reason why I always recommend you spend a little more before you buy and get the Stainless Steel version.

I agree 100% but back when I got my Stromung in 99 there were limited choices and Stromung did not make them in SS until around 6M after I got mine

yes it was a non stainless steel unit. I called Cobb tuning up and Trey told me to send the muffler to them and they would see if its warrentyable. I'll update this post with pics later and with info from Cobb. Thanks. Frank

mine rotted in 2 years as well, not surpirsed though, monreal uses lots of salt int he winter...I saw it comming though. I have a SS strommung now and I am sure it will last much longer.

I also give a guick spray to the undercarriage of my car occasionally to get salt off in the winter.

Sorry to hear about it, but we all learned the lesson the hard way here...i should have spent the extra $ for SS.

Actually salt has nothing to do w/ it. It's rusting out from the inside. When you start a cold car a ton of condensate water is dumped into the muffler. It seems that the back bottom rear sections on the inside accumulate water and just sits there. Short trips would only make the matter worse. They should have designed it w/ a weep hole in the back or something. They rarely use salt here and mine went in two years. I understand they the warranty is only two years but having it go that soon is not really reasonable. Just cause the drive train one is up in 60K I didn't expect my Scooby to stop running.

Everyone I know with the mild steel version has had it rust through in the same location. My 2 year old SS stromung is still going strong.

Cobb did not do anything wrong here. They sold you a mild steel muffler. If you do a search around here you will find out that untreated mild steel rusts like crazy. Even treated mild steel some times rusts.

The only sure way to make sure that you have a long lasting muffler is to either get alumnized steel or stainless.
