Default Heater blower smell? Wiring diagram?

Hey ladies and gents! Great site. I own a 98 Legacy GT. First Subaru. Won't be the last, thats for sure.
Got my first couple of questions for you all.

First, I got this stink coming from the heater blower. There is no filter, so what do I clean to get it out? It was like this when I got it couple months ago. It usually kicks in after 20 mins of driving. Cooling or heating. Don't know what to do. Sub dealer hasn't ever heard of it. Help?

Second, looking to put in a second set of aux fogs and picked up another fog switch and harness from salvage yard. Does anyone have a diagram or explanation of the wires off of the pigtail? I got 5 coming off, incl. ground.

Thanks.

What type of smell? Antifreeze, oil, gasoline, exhaust, roadkill or fungi-funk? Probably a bacteria problem due to condensation in your HVAC system. I know there are deodorizers (not smell pretty air fresheners) on the market designed specifically for these moisture/bacteria related problems. You should be able to get this product at any auto supply store. I tried some, sprayed it right into the vents, then waited a bit and let her rip! Success!

Hope this helps!

Sooberoo,
If you get this, please email me. I've been looking to talk to you about your lens repair thread. Tried to get in touch with you but you set your profile to not receive emails through this site.

I may have a Subaru dealer interested in dealing with this guy in Canada.

And thank you for the tip on the smell. By the way, it was a burn smell of sorts. Nothing like a clutch, gas, or antifreeze. Its kinda like a variation of burnt popcorn, but not appetizing in a way or fashion.

It probably is bacteria like you said. As soon as I get time, I'll get on that.

In the mean time I am looking to finally getting my MRT exhaust system in. Can't wait.

Thanks again.

If you're getting a burn smell, it's possible that one of a couple things could be causing it.

1) The fan motor is overheating and starting to degrade internally (likely)
2) The rheostat (fan speed controller/switch) is overheating and causing the smell (more likely)
3) There is a short/load in the wiring to the fan that's causing the wiring to overheat (most likely).

Don't mean to alarm you, but given the amount of time it takes to start smelling this each time, you could be sitting on a fire waiting to happen. It sounds like something is heating up and burning or near-burning somewhere between the switch and the fan motor itself.

Try rolling up all your windows, turning on the fan with the HVAC control set to "recycle" so that no outside air is getting in, and see if you smell the "smell" immediately. If you do, it's probably the fungus among us in the vents that was mentioned previously.

But, if you don't smell it right away and you do smell it after the fan has been running for a while, then I'd be concerned. If you can run end-to-end continuity checks on your wiring (to check for shorts/grounds) yourself, do that. But if you don't feel like you're up to it, get thyself to a car electrician quickly, don't pass Go and don't collect $200.00. And until you know what's causing it, it wouldn't hurt to carry an appropriate fire extinguisher.

Keep us appraised of what you find.

Br, Dale
