Default Stage IV Wagon 1/4 mile times on stock muffler

Went to US 41 today with the MFBA(Midwest Fbody Association). I took both my 02' WRX Wagon and 02' Camaro SS. I'm quite disappointed but what can you do. I was pretty sure of myself that I'd be in the 12s on stock muffler but that didn't happen. Here are my wagon times and mods.

60ft.........1.787
330ft.......5.397
1/8 ET.....8.408
1/8 MPH..82.48
1000' ET.10.981
1/4 ET.....13.188
1/4 MPH..102.31

Mods are:

2002 Platinum WRX Wagon

VF30, UTEC, TurboXS TMIC,BPM Stealthback, Perrin Uppipe, Sti Injectors, Walbro Fuel pump, AVO inlet hose, TurboXS Short Ram Intake and IK22s.

How restrictive is the stock muffler? I was also shifting at redline. I also don't understand why my MPH is so low. I believe I'm running 18psi on the VF30. To give you an idea of my driving, I drove my wagon to a 13.70 at 96mph with just a boost controller. I know I would have ran a 13.50 or better when I added my up-pipe because it felt so much stronger. Its just kind of disheartening when you add Stage IV items and you can only run 3 tenths better. Tell me what you think. I'm also on a custom tuned UTEC by RiftsWRX. Even with the best tuner in the world I'm still slow . Maybe my car is mad that I messed with it.

hmm...somethings definately wrong with that time. you got a decent 60' though. you should be trapping MUCH HIGHER than 102 with those mods and judging by your previous runs, I would have guessed mid 12's. You should have tried taking the muffler off at the track to see if it made a difference, but I've seen people run 12's with it, so I'd imagine that somethings not right...my guess is tuning.

I've never heard of riftswrx? Is he a well known tuner in our area?

High flow cat and stock muffler = death on the top. And it reflects in your trap speeds. The other things to bear in mind are vehicle speed, temperature, track variance, a bunch of things. I do agree though. For the #'s you were pulling I'd expect at least 105 MPH traps. 250-260WHP net's around 105-107MPH traps on average. That all depends on how long the HP curve can be sustained, which means sustaining the torque curve as long as possible.

Was there knock at all? I know your tune is AGRESSIVE.... so I know it's not that. The only thing I can think of is that your heat soaked. Remember the coolant and air temp corrections that I set as well. they're there to protect you on a day to day drive, but if your hot lapping the car on the track, your going to trigger it, pulling a point of timing, and richening you up another .3AFR.

Loose the muffler and the cat and you'll easily hit your high 12's. But without spray, if your on race gas, the physical limit of the VF30 is going to be around 290WHP. After that, your pushing hot air.

We can talk more on thurday at our meets if you can make it over.

P.S. Nice launch BTW

Jorge, I just remembered that our last dyno before we left with the cut-out closed netted 22X awhp. That might have not been a fluke. I'm sure its very possible for folks to to run a 13.2 at 102mph on stock turbo with that kind of power. I could be wrong though.

I don't know how much power this guy is putting out but he ran almost identical to me but on stock turbo, stock intercooler, stock fuel system and a slower launch.

Jorge, I don't think heat soak was an issue considering I put the car on ice every 2 passes. I was seeing some knock on some of them. Going to drive around and do some logging today.

22x? One thing I can say for certainty... you don't swing 40 WHP in 2 mins.. even the stock adaptive system isn't that weird. It IS possible for the Road dyno to get a glitch as it's recording. Which would cause some runs to read weird. That is why we do several, to get consistency. So the 22x is moot, IMO. If you were getting knock, period, I'd have stopped right there. Knock alone is going to kill you more then anythng else. Especially if it was sustained knock, remember... you can pull up to !16! points of timing. That would put your high RPM effective timing at all of 10.... Your making well under 22x WHP at that point.

Did you log anything while you were at the track? See.. if you are knocking, then your switching to your high det fuel map (built into the ECU) which will make a rich setup, richer... meaning even less power. There are a lot of variables. All I can recommend is to live with your logger for now.. and test scenarios... then get back to me, and we can go from there.

Feel free to PM me, or give me a buzz, we can go from there.

Drop the stock muffler at the track as it will kill 15-20 whp on a STG4 car! Your 60ft is good overall but only marginal for a STG4 car. I would also turn off your correction setpoints while drag racing since they will most likely be on while you start your run.

I would say your et matches your MPH so your driving well but your down on power. I ran the same setup with our exhaust on pump gas to a 12.9 @ 106.7mph.

Good luck.

Jorge,

Regarding the low dyno, I was just throwing that possibility out there since that had crossed my mind. I wasn't able to obtain a laptop for the track so I wasn't able to log the runs( I wish I was). I'm going to continue to log my runs. I have a 1/4 mile strip about 2 minutes from my house. I can send the logs to you guys to see what you think since I'm very new to the UTEC

Phil,

Do you mean just run without a muffler or purchase an aftermarket one? I bought a cut-out for the car but the car ran like crap since I didn't have a seperate map for it.

phil,
is the stock muffler the restrictive part of the rear section or also the piping? i was thinking about just changing the muffler part of the factory rear section since im kind of broke at the moment, how would that do? also a 10-15 hp should be enough for a butt dyno to detect, but when i unbolted my muffler on my stage 4 car, it actually seeemed slower. also how much hp could the wrx gain if the high flow cat was replaced by the race pipe on a stage 4 wrx?

Its the muffler more than the axle baclk piping, its super restrictive.

I recorded some 1/4 mile runs. Here are the logs. I stopped at 105mph. Tell me what you think.

First run

Second run

use #1 for your logs, they're going to help the most.
