Unhappy engine overhaul

I need help big time! There is a piston slap under my hood and Subaru is NOW just saying that because of my intake, my warranty is void (even though they have been working on my car for the past 2 years!) They will only give me an$800 credit, but I need to do an engine overhaul. My b-friend might do it if we could get some help, otherwise does anyone know of any garages that might do it for a lesser cost than the dealer (AAA-1 will do it for $3500) PLEASE NEED ADVICE

How old is the car? How many miles? Is it under warranty? Are you refering to Continental Subaru or Subaru of America?

How would a 99 be under warranty, did you get the extended warranty?

There might be someone willing to do it, but I will let them offer if they are interested. Thats a pretty major project, so they might not have time.

The nice thing about letting those people work on your car is you have someone to go back to when something is wrong. Of course, it's going to be expensive. When you let your friends work on your car, you are taking the responsibility if anything goes wrong. Just don't blame them if something goes wrong six months later. With all that said, I'd probably do it myself with the help of my friends. Good Luck. I'm sure there are plenty of people here that would love to help out. This is a great time for upgrades.

Warranty problem at continental of subaru. No way! I do not believe that.

Hey I do not know the whole story on this matter. But I know if you have any warranty on the car. You have to fight and fight hard to get it done. And remeber to go to the top if you have to. Good luck on the battle. And engine swap.

I will have a reputable shop standing behind my work very soon. The announcement will come early next month, but what I will say is this. I will be working on Perfomance mods on Subarus very soon. I will be working there several days a week and we are hopeful that we can fill all my time with Subaru stuff. Anyway give me a call and we can talk. Although I will agree with the others as well. Make sure you have exhausted every warrantee possibility before looking at another approach.

ok, here goes, I purchased the extended warranty, i have a 99 and it does have high miles (no thanks to my ex b-friend) and I have tried everything, spoke to soa and the dealer, i even spoke to the subaru rep that comes up every couple of weeks. I finally got berry, the GM of continental involved and they finally decreed that all they can offer me is an $8oo credit (out of goodwill) coming from their petty cash account because of the fact that subaru has worked on my car the entire time and no one mentioned my intake being on there. They suck! I dunno who else I could call to go up the chain either. Otherwise, I'm saving money to fix my subie at the moment and trying to figure out who is gonna fix it... I'll give Dave a call, thanks guys.

Babyrs,

Even extended warranties have a mileage limit. You say you purchased one but what is the limit on it and most importantly, are you over it?
You allude to that in your post.

If it is over the limit on the warranty mileage-wise, neither Subaru or Continental owe you anything by law and if that is the case, I am actually quite impressed that they would offer even $800 "out of good will" for the rebuild of your motor. Don't get me wrong, I am no huge fan of Continental but that is going above and beyond. I am really curious as to why they would offer "free money for repairs" if there is no liability on their part.

If you are not over the limit, have they specifically said the engine is blown because of the aftermarket intake or that they are canceling the warranty because of it being on there? An air intake could cause a lean condition and just might be the culprit in this matter. However, since all the maintenance has been performed at the dealership, I would say it is wrong for them to conveniently void the warranty after something goes sour knowing good and well that it has been there the whole time. If this is the case, then you probably have grounds for a legal case Please, be honest about everything, dig up your receipts from maintenance records and keep us informed.

If you are a UAA student. You can get free legal help. Or try to find a good lawyer. Also remember that if their is some ones higher then the people. Try subaru of america. One more thing. Why would they give you 800. if it was your fault any way. You have to fight hard.

Get a hold of me. I might be able to help out with Continetal if there is anything that can be done. I will go over your warrantee with you and there may still be some things that can be done. Do me a favor and sit down and write up everyone that you have talked to about this and what they said and we you may still have some options. Talk to soon.

I would definately fight this. Unless they can actually document that the intake is what caused the failure they cannot void your warranty due to that part. We can do some further research with SEMA on this. What kind of intake do you have on the car anyways?

Keep us posted, and I will help out wherever I can. We need to let Continental know that they are pissing off a lot of good customers, and if they keep it up we will all by EVO's.

Continental blaming the intake seems like a lame excuse.

Look to the VW R32 for another Subaru alternative.

Check it out here...
