Question CEL updated

Manual Tran.
1025 Mi.
P0480
Came on when I turned the car on. Stayed on for the 30mi drive home from work. Gas cap is tight
Went to Stolhman who pulled the code for me. They told me the code is for the gas cap. I was a little bit suspicious because I have made it a point to tighten the crap out of it. I looked up the actual code P0480 and it turns out to be the code for Fan 1 relay low input.
So, today (2000 miles) the light comes on again with the same symptoms. I pull open the hood and push down on my relays. The one for Fan 1 had some play and I was able to push it down a little bit. Turned engine back on and CEL is now off.
Strange that Stohlman BS'd me with the engine code.

Sadly, your experience at Stohlman seems fairly typical. It is getting to the point where we must all educate ourselves because the average tech doesn't know or doesn't care (or both).

Default Unknown Code!

transmission: manual

what date/mileage: March 9th/approx. 28,3xx miles

what code: p3110 (Unknown Code)

dealer: Pulled myself, scanner did not recognize the code

Cleared code myself

I drove 215 miles on a full tank of gas with Turbo 108 Octane Booster in the tank, while using Amaco 93. On the way home I filled up with 93 octane at 1/4 tank. No Octane Booster was added.

Code came on while cruising in 4th at approx. 3-4K RPM.

Anyone know what the Code is?

Default P0457 and TSB 09-36-03

* 2002 WRX automatic transmission
* approx. 16800 miles (27000 kms)
* P0457
* mechanic tightened gas cap, test drove car, cleared code

Came up again in the same week:
* approx. 16840 miles (27100 kms)
* P0457
* tightened exhaust hose from TSB 09-36-03

Immediately after the CEL came on I noticed a significant decrease in the car's performance. Later the mechanic said that this is because the car goes into "safe mode" with that particular code.

The first CEL happened only a few days after the same garage performed the work on TSB 09-36-03 "Fuel Smell in Cold Weather". In the end it turned out that they had incorrectly installed the hose mentioned in the bulletin and this was triggering the P0457. Wish they had checked that the first time instead of telling me I wasn't tightening the gas cap properly!

For more info on that TSB, check out this topic:

Date: 7/11/03
Code: P0302 (Misfire in cylinder 2)

First CEL for the car purchased 10/01.

I let Auto Zone pull the code for me since they do it for free.

It was about 85 degrees and fairly humid when it went on. The car displayed no unusual behavior. I'm going to pull the plugs this weekend for replacement so I'll see what #2 looks like and determine if further investigation is needed.

My only engine mods are the intake silencer removal and the 3/16" mod.

I'm still over this car.

What is P1180 on a WRX? It seems to be a subaru specific code and I can't find what it is.

Was your gas cap tight?

If not do not worry.

If so, check your connections to the charcoal canister under the passenger side rear bumper. Check the wiring and the hoses. Also check the the vacuum "t" fitting under the alternator. It is the blue conector. Make sure they are all tight.

Don't ever do this, ever. The car NEEDs a minimum of 91 here in the states. This is a stupid and potentially costly error. Lots of people will argue to the contrary, but there is a reason Subaru insists on premium gas in these cars. Unless your car is specifically mapped to use 89, NEVER put that crap in your car.

Default agreed

I also agree to never put in 89 octane. When I bought my WRX in 2002, the dealer practically drilled it into my head that NOTHING below 90 octane was acceptable. You may be causing some serious damage if you continue to use a lower grade of gas than recommended!
