I had this problem soon after I bought my '02.

If you don't know already, 1442 relates to the 'vent control solenoid'. It is under the right rear fender, close to the rear bumper.

The local dealer initially just reset the ECU.

Second time, they cleaned the connector and packed it with dielectric grease.

Third time, my ECU was sent to NJ to be reflashed.

If I were you, I would have the VIN run through Subaru's computer to see what hs been done on your car previously.

They put zip-ties on many of the hose connections on mine in addition to the reflash. No problems since.

* Tran: 5MT (2005 WRX Sedan)
* On: ~9,000 miles, following a restart after a short (< 1 min) trip.
* Off: ~9,100 miles, cleared using OBD scan tool (self)
* Code: P0304 (x2), Cylinder 4 misfire
* Dealer: Carlsen Subaru (CA)
* Dealer response: Watching for now; will go to dealer if I see another CEL.

* Notes: I have a vague suspicion that this is due to a bad tank of gas. I went through 10 gallons of ARCO 91 with no problems, then about 3 gallons into a tank of Shell 91 is when the CEL tripped. I've been filling with Shell or Chevron pretty much since getting the car, and filled with the ARCO in a pinch. Could this be due to the ARCO gas?

Post persistent CEL

Total Miles: 37400
CEL's: 6
Codes: P0457 Evaporative system leak (gas tank)

Happens consistently. No change in performance, so I ignored the thing. Tighten the gas cap as much as possible, had tank dropped and sensor replaced, had tank replaced (due to accident) but light still comes on. Last check was at 34,705 and light was back within 500 miles. Tank was holding pressure, all systems go. Light will not go out without a dealer reset.

BTW, 2002 WRX, manual trans, built in 7.01. Running car now on track days in CA, no change in CEL behavior.

I bought my car 3 years ago and i was installing led lights on my cluster and i discovered that my check engine light had been on and it had black electrical tape covering the section that prevented me from seeing the light on.

Default Check engine light

I have a 2004 WRX with 40500 miles.

For the last three weeks my check engine light has been turning on and off. The first time (approx. 40000 mi.) it came on for a few hours after an oil change. The next time (40050 mil) it stayed on for a week (200 mi). It was off for a week and since has turned on and off every day.

The car seems to run normally, but I've noticed the gas mileage drop some. I can't take it to the shop to have the code read without the light on and never seem to make it that far.

Does anyone have a thought on what's causing this?

Thanks

I thought some codes were stored in memory even after the CE light goes out.

If not, you might consider buying an inexpensive code reader and keeping it in the car.

Yes sometimes you can read the stored codes.

If you keep getting the loose gas cap code, replace the gas cap.

Didn't get code checked reset my self.
Thinking this is since I put a cobb intake and the down pipe on last weekend. I was entering the interstate and was in 5th gear and going 60 and pressed the gas ever so slightly and BAM CEL. Up to this point I have never had a CEL. I am thinking that it is either the mass airflow sensor or the O2 sensor... Will keep an eye on it...

Do you have engine management? If not than I believe you can throw a cel with a DP and no EM.

No I am not running any kind of EM. I was going to but so far have not done it. I have been running it how it is for over a thousand miles before it happend after I reset it I have had no problems yet. Does seem the car has issues with cruise control at lower speeds around 65 compared to 82...

Mr. Sparkle will the Engine Management take care of the CEL or do you think I need to do something else with it?

I know that Cobbs AP will take care of the CEL from an aftermarket DP, so yes it probably will.

Man, I thought I'd dodged the bullet and got a first-allocation WRX that WASN'T going to code-out like many others have.

Well, it finally happened:

~4400Miles
First Allocation WRX Wagon 5MT
Going ~70 light cruising (off boost)
Code: 1443 (yep...)

...
Blast from the past...
Well I've thrown this code for the second time (first time 7/2001!), and I thought I'd add some new info to the long-ass thread:

~56000Miles
First Allocation WRX Wagon 5MT
Code: 1443 (yep...)

New twist: I'm 3 months off my extended warranty, so now the local dealership wants to charge $142.50 for the recommended ECU reflash that everyone seems to be getting to fix the little bugger. Started a new thread about the warranty implications of this, but wanted to keep this up to date, as it may start affecting others as they fall off warranty.

I HAVE A 2002 WRX MANUAL...

Code: P0545 Exhaust gas temperature sensor circuit low input
P1544 High exhaust Temperature

I fix this problem by changing the EGT sensor in the uppipe and the Cel goes away...
But I usually get this cell about one or twice a year.. This could not be normal.. THIS IS MY 5 EGT SENSOR since I got my car back in 2003...
Has any body have this problem in their car?

Jose

* 03 WRX
* manual
* August 2007
* After Jiffy Lube change, they did not change the oil properly
** Cityside Subaru, MA reset the code and refilled the oil.

* January 2009
* TVG sensor on
* Wakefield Subaru, MA reset the code, said the TVG has to be replaced($1000) if the code happens again
* a week later the code appears again
* Replaced the TVG (the code disappeared)

* Oct 2009
* Jiffy Lube Oil change
* The CEL came one a day later. Discovered the radiator leaking(it cost me $500 to replace it - ~$300 part ~$200 labor)
* Wakefield Subaru change O2 sensor ($500)
* a week later the CEL came on again
* Wakefield Subaru replaced Air Flow sensor($500)
** When I asked how come two sensors went out in the same week the answer was that the car has 150 sensors and it is OK. I asked are the sensors bad or there is some other explanation, and the answer was that the sensors have to be replaced before doing other changes. Diagnostics was done through replace and see what happens rather than actual thought process. Jiffy Lube guys said it could be old spark plugs.
* a week later the CEL came on again... I put on the electric tape over the CEL
