EDIT: automatic wagon hehe

notes: car still ran fine at 130MPH

Pulled it myself, cleared it myself...

Frankly I'm not going to put my car out of commision for 3-5 days while they send my ECU off to be burned... I'll wait for the inevitable bulletin to come out then they'll have some on hand.

Thumbs up

Got my check engine light at 2110 miles went out at 2227 miles.
Brought it to dealer. I believe the code was PO1443. They gave me a loaner car. The ECU has been removed and sent back to Subaru via Fed-Ex to be reprogrammed. I was told it would take 3 business days for it to be sent back to the dealer. I was told that this was the second WRX that they have done this for with no further problems after the re-install.

Maybe this is the definitive cure for the CE Light Problem.

Loaner car is a Legacy GT.
Nice car but it's an automatic. No Fun!

Default damnit, again!

2nd CE light
1250 miles
I'm sure is probably the same code (1443)
I'm just gonna pull the batterly cable and let it sit to reset the computer. And jack up the car and double check the lines going to the evap box. Sugar said something about adding a clamp, might try that.

Transmission: Manual

Mileage on/off: 5476 / 5640

Code: P1443

Dealer: Jim Reed Subaru, Nashville, TN (serviced)
Tony Moore Subaru, Decatur, AL
(purchased)

Action: Dealer reset the ECU and informed me

that the gas cap was left loose. Of course, this is sheer nonsense; the problem is a design defect in the ECU, as this thread plainly establishes. Either the dealer did not ship the ECU to Subaru because it does not want to do warranty work (possible -- Jim Reed is known for this), or Subaru has failed to inform all dealers of the defect. Either way, Subaru had better fix this problem, or they face legal action.

Manual trans.
CEL on at about 680 miles for no apparent reason.
Went off following week (about 200 miles later) for no apparent reason.
Cancelled service appointment at dealer (Suburban Nissan Subaru, Troy, MI)
Hasn't come back on. Car performs well. Currently at 1300 miles.

Will take in for service if it comes back.

Transmission: Manual
Mileage: @3300
Code: P0303 - misfire in cylinder #3
Dealer: Tischer Subaru, Silver Spring, MD
Maintenance Action: Checked plug, wire, and coil. Cleared ECU memory. Test drove and problem did not re-occur.

Technician suspected fuel contamination, in particular water in the fuel, suggested I use a different fuel station.

*Manual Transmission
*light came on July 5, 2001 @ 3494 miles; went off with no intervention on my part on July 7, 2001 @3605 miles
*no code has been pulled
*Carlsen Subaru, Redwood City
*I talked to the dealer's service department on the phone. Since the light had already gone off he said not to worry about it unless it comes on again. He mentioned that sometimes people don't get the gas cap on tight enough (not the case for me). He also mentioned that some of the cars have had a vacuum hose which was not attached (would not tell me which one). Finally he said that if it goes off again I should definitely bring it in because "any number of things can go wrong" with emissions systems these days...

Edit - January 15, 2002
Manufacture date: February 2001
*light reappeared on January 11, 2002 @ 10,800 miles; turned off with no intervention by me after approximately 100 miles
*P1443 code pulled
*Santa Cruz Subaru
*Made an appointment to drop off car so that the ECU can be sent to Japan for reprogramming. Loaner car will be provided. Santa Cruz has my business from now on.

no code yet, in shop as we speak
Flemington Subaru
none yet, but will be covered by warranty

Good thing I was already bringing the car in for service on tail lights that came dead on arrival, so they should be able to fix both in one shot.

A while back I had a cel on my 5-spd wagon. Gotta love my.subaru.com

Service Provider: Bertera Subaru, Inc.
Service Date: 6/12/01
Mileage: 773
Repair Order #: 45887
Service Description: Warranty ORVR Evaporative Vent Control Solenoid Valve <--- They found water in the solenoid valve.

I asked them if they did anything to prevent it in the future and they kinda gave me a vacant stare and said" "uhhh... no".

So if some of us are taking it to the dealer and they find water in the solenoid.. shouldn't that mean that SOA should be trying to prevent crud from getting in there.. instead of reprogramming ECU's?

* P1443
* Stevens Creek Subaru
* Pulled ECU out, sent it to SOA for reprogamming of the flash

Note: There are 4 WRXs at Stevens Creek Subaru with their ECUs pulled and sent to SOA for re-flashing. The front man for the garage said that they are sending every ECU with the P1443 code back to SOA for re-flashing.

First CEL
5-speed Wagon
7/21 8200 Miles
Code 1443
Superior Subaru called SOA for guidance. Dealer says that my ECU must be sent in for mods.
I know someone else posted details of SOA having extra ECMs floating around. Now I have to dig for one.
Reset code, light out for now.

3/4 tank of Amoco 93 octane
93 degrees in traffic slowing down when light came on.
No other problems noted

* First CEL
* 5spd sedan
* silencer w/K&N
* occured @ 450 miles on 7/24/01, 8a EST
* no code yet (I suspect it's 0303) edit: P0304
* Beechmont Subaru, Cincinnati

Comments:
* CEL went on, off, on, off in space of 1.3 miles to work
* happened both times in 1st b/t 2000 & 3500 RPM
* ~ 75 degrees with high humidity, dry roads
* car noticably mis-fired (lurched) a couple times for each CEL
* 3/4 gas tank with 94 Shell
* checked gas cap (it was tight); unscrewed & re-tightened
* will drive it some more before taking to dealer for diagnostics

Edit: The CEL actually started FLASHING later in the day ... took it immediately to the dealer and they got a "P0304". They changed the plug and I'm back in business ...

I haven't had my CEL since a few months ago (touch wood) but I noticed while installing my hitch that one of the three hoses to the evap cannister was missing a clamp.

Anyone else's like this?

AAAaaargh! Guess who finally threw a CEL this weekend?

Man, I thought I'd dodged the bullet and got a first-allocation WRX that WASN'T going to code-out like many others have.

Well, it finally happened:

~4400Miles
First Allocation WRX Wagon 5MT
Going ~70 light cruising (off boost)
Code: 1443 (yep...)

Dealer was impressed that I predicted the code before it was pulled. They were starting to give me a big line about "Well its saturday and you don't have an appointment so you might have to leave it for a few days..."

Well, anywho code is cleared and hasn't come back yet, they've ordered a replacement drain valve-whatchamacallit.

Cheers.

You should have them call the techline and get the ECU reflashed.

Lucky me, I get to join up

* transmission manual 2002 wrx sport wagon

* what date/mileage it went on/off -- 828 Miles on, Reset by dealer at 848ish

* what code was retrieved by the dealer - P1443 - Big surprise!

* name of dealer - Vanbortel Subaru

* what action the dealer took - Was very familiar with this error, was stating that they would probably be replacing / reflashing the ecu. Said if I had any further problems with it that they would replace the vent. (Basically that this meant on occassion that I was venting fuel) Nice guy, saw the car on a Saturday when closed just to pull the error code. Really appreciate that!

Default Just an Update...

Now at just over 7,700 miles.

5-speed manual, sedan. Only mod is a K&N filter panel.

Try to use Sunoco 94 octane exclusively.

The car is driving far better than pre- or post-break-in periods.

No CEL light at all.

* They sent it back to SOA, and then it was temporarily lost in the mail for a week. Got a Enterprise pos car that stunk so bad I made them replace it, got a Jimmy in stead. When I got the car back it had a bent license plate and scratched bumber (underneath) that I can't prove happened while at the dealer...

The CE light has not come on again, thankfully!

Not looking forwad to next service.

Oh, I washed the car before I turned it in so they wouldn't send it through a car wash. Instead they just sprayed tons of gunk on the tires that was thrown on the paint when I drove it away.
