Question Questions about stock exhaust

Ok, here's the deal. I want to go back to my stock exhaust. I have my stock muffler still with about 2.5" of crooked pipe left on the back end.

1) Can I get the stock midpipe and get a muffler shop to fix it?

2) Would it be easier to just get a whole new cat-back stock exhaust?

3) Was there anything else before the muffler in the stock exhaust like a second muffler/resonator?

4) Anybody local want to buy a 2.25" catback with a magnaflow muffler?

What was wrong with the aftermarket system that made you want to switch back? Just wondering...

1) Any good muffler shop should be able to fix or replace the sections that are bent/broken. Though this might hurt performance depending on how the pipe is.

2) Depends how broke it is. It might be more cost effective to replace it if it's really banged up though

3) There is a resonator in the stock midpipe.

Orndog, nothing, I want to switch to a quiet exhaust. I don't like giving girls disclaimers, "Heh, sorry baby, I went through a phase where I thought spending $300 on my car would make it fast."

Door, it's not banged up. I'm gonna buy a midpipe, or maybe I can trade someone or hell, maybe someone will dump theirs on me. How much is a midpipe? Which part or parts is it on subaruparts.com?

Unlikely, but I might try the Greddy exhaust. I know they're generally the quietest.

Is Greddy the quietest? I just want a little more than stock. I was thinking maybe the Ion in Quiet Acoustic would be quiet.

Yes, compared to other Japanese brands like Blitz, Tanabe, HKS, Apexi, etc. I've never heard of Ion. Don't know about those UK/Australian Subaru-specific brands.

Anyway, Which one of these?

"exhaust pipe assembly-rear? $129.44?"

Anyone know?

Hmm, first time this parts book came in handy. You're lucky...

Here are the parts for a 98+ 2.5L engine

(SOA Part #, Description)

44200FA150 - Exhautst Pipe, Rear (midpipe)
44300FA110 - Muffler
44022AA210 - Gasket, Rear Pipe to Muffler

If anything, try to find stuff at a junkyard or from someone that's changed theirs and willing to sell for cheap. Better than spending $100+ for this stuff...

what's the second quietest? tanabe? OR, i understand GReddy is quiet, but is it still loud enough to notice? i just don't want to spend $400+ on an exhaust that produces next to no sound. i don't want a loud can either.

Don't know meZoom. And you will hear the difference with any aftermarket exhaust. The greddy will be louder than stock, but not super-loud; most exhausts sound good on our 2.5l engines, not like fart cans. There was a comparison in SCC or SuperStreet or one of those mags a few months ago. It was for the WRX, but it had most exhausts and you could draw similar conclusions about the RS. They had decibel ratings too. If you find it, let me know. Keep in mind WRX's should be a bit quieter I think across the board.

I have a GReddy EVO and it was quieter as just a cat-back system. I added a Borla header and it got louder, but I realized that the added loudness was coming directly from the header. The stock header pipes have a flange (as you know) and it drowns out alot of the sound. If you want less sound, use a stock header and cat with a GReddy EVO.

A Subaru technician told me that the stock exhaust system (with the stock muffler) has 14 psi backpressure and the WRX system has 12 psi.

Before you do decide, search Ion. They are in the Vendor section (search vendor for sale), and I'm sure they have clips posted. They are great to deal with, and have good quality stuff. Their catback in quiet trim sounds sweet.
