Default ATR Turbo Back Exhaust and Uppipe

I recently installed (With the help of Sedan 2003) the complete ATR exhaust package on my 2003 WRX. Their exhaust offerings consists of a cat back system, downpipe and an up pipe. They supply all needed gaskets and clamps for the up pipe and the turbo back connections.

Before I get into results, I'm going to backpedal a little on who ATR is. Applied Technology and Research is a manufacturing company based in Fair Play, SC. They do all their exhaust products inhouse on a CNC mandrel bender. They also manufacture their own line of mufflers. They have been around for about 15 years or so starting off with the Buick turbo Regal. Since my background is mainly with turbo Regals, I decided to give their stuff a try since the Buick stuff is always top quality. Their website is www.atrperformance.com

This stuff did not disappoint. Installation was a snap. Up pipe dropped right in place and sealed up with no problems using the graphite gaskets they provided with the up pipe. The exhaust went on using all the factory hangers and mated right up to the downpipe. The downpipe did need a tad coaxing to line up with the mounting bracket underneath the car but it was nothing major. Took maybe 2 minutes to get secure.

I did a before and after dyno test on the system. The results are below.



As you can see, there was a gain of a little over 13 horsepower and 7 ft/tq. This was at the same boost level with no changes other than switching the exhaust. These are also the only mods to the car, no intake, etc. Just the exhaust changes. It was also somewhat warmer at the second dyno session, at least 10 degrees ambient.

These are in MP3 format and were taken about 3 feet from the rear of the exhaust off to the left side slightly.

Finally, here are a couple of shots of the exhaust system installed. I think they are pretty self explanatory.






In closing, I don't really know whether these gains are average or not for this type of bolt on. However, after looking at the pieces, it would be very hard to improve on the design from a flow standpoint.

Here is a shot of their downpipe I stole from their website.



As you can see, there is plenty of room for the wastegate exhaust to flow into the downpipe. The rest of the exhaust is all 3 inch and the muffler is a straight through design with a 4 inch tip.

In closing, thanks to Dwight (2003 Sedan) for handling the majority of the installation and to Jason and Steve at FI Systems for handling the dyno chores for me.
