Default Are the heat controls supposed to be illuminated?

I just got the car a few weeks ago and didn't drive it night before I bought it. I noticed that all of the heater controls (where you want heat, and at what heat/how much) are not illuminated. When you press each of the buttons, a light illunminates, but that is pretty useless since I don't know what I'm pressing. Also the rear defroster light does not light when I press it.

Are these supposed to light up and I just have a burnt bulb that I need to get them replaced or did Subaru not make them lightup for some reason.

The HVAC controls are supposed to light up. Your bulb is probably burnt out as this is a common problem for the 2nd generation Legacy.

There's a nice set of instructions and P/N's on the Scooby Mods site on how to replace them.

I was thinking of doing the same thing, since mine are burnt out... do you have any part numbers/descriptions/pictures of the LED's you used?

Well.. I'm not happy with the results yet, so when I do it again(soon), I'll do pics/details on how to do it. Or, you can mail the unit to me and I'll do it for you..

I could use some extra income

Thanks! Do you know how much the bulbs should cost? I just got the car so I could have them do it, but if its only going to be a few bucks then I'd like to do it myself.

Oh, okay, 2.25 for bulbs isn't bad at all...now I just need to find out how to get to the rear defroster light.

And info on how you used blue bulbs would be appreciated

EDIT

But 7.95 shipping is a BIT much Anyone have a place to get them with REASONABLE shipping charges?

Yes.

For the rear defroster, the easiest method to get to it:

Unscrew the instrument cluster bezel (two screws under the hood at the top, and probably some on the bottm, I can't remember This is the piece of plastic the rear defroster, cruise, and foglight switches are mounted in. Pull it away from the dash just a little bit, you just need to be able to unhook the harness from the back of the defrost switch, and compress the clips on the top and bottom of the switch so it can slide out of the front of the bezel. (it's easier than it sounds.)

Now you have the switch in your hands. There's 2 bulbs, one for the orange illumination you get when the switch is on, and one for the green illumination. They look like plastic phillips screws, that's the base for the bulb. Back it out (usually 1/4-1/2 turn), then try and find a replacement.....

Unfortunatley, I don't know exactly where to find replacements...
I had some other switches from a junkyard lying around, so I cannibalized them; I'm not sure if Subaru has a part number for the bulb, or if they want you to buy the whole switch. FWIW, the bulbs I used came out of a foglight switch, so iit might be worth a trip to the junkyard, as they probably won't charge you more than $1 a switch....

I'm still unclear as to whether the vent (air direction) controls are supposed to be illuminated or not.

On my BD the temp slider gauge is backlit, as is the recirculate button and A/C button. It is a pain that the push buttons for choosing between feet, defrost, upper vent, etc. aren't lit. I don't think my fan speed knob indicators are lit either.

Before I tear apart my dash can anyone confirm whether they are supposed to be backlit.

The link to the posted instructions mention only 3 bulbs. My guess is they correspond to the temp slider gauge, recirculate button and A/C button. If this is true, then I can't get any better illumination than I already have.

It breaks down like this:

Top lamp lights the pushbuttons controls(where the air is going to go)
Left Lamp lights the fan speed knob
Bottom lamp lights the air temp lever

You'll note that when you push a button though, there is a small lamp below it that lights. That's because they used LEDs for those. Why they couldn't use them everywhere, I don't know.

Thanks Speedwagon. Looks like I have some burnt out lights then. Off to Radio Shack I guess.
