Default WRX starter motor work on JDM EJ20?

Anyone know? I'm assuming it will, but I'm not sure.

The starter is dying on my STi Ver. 3 (MY97), and I'm hoping to replace it with a USDM WRX part.

Anyone?

STi Ver. 3 manual. Cool, so a starter for any manual tranny Subaru should work?

Where is the starter located? I'm at work, car is stranded in a parking lot, too dark to poke around looking for it last night.

My version 2 starter looks a different than my 2000 RS starter the bolt holes are the same. Plus a flywheel for a 2000 RS will not fit in my Ver2 EJ20, it's too big. The trans cases are the same size so I would imagine the point where the starter mates up to the flywheel will be different.

I had a Exedy flywheel that was going in wistful's 2000 RS and we put it up against my EJ20G and it would hit the engine case where it mates the tranny case. and it fit fine into the RS.

I went to do the measurments Tuesday and my friend borrowed my rachet set and left it in his car. He is stopping over tonight and dropping it off and I'm taking the scoop off and taking measurements for ya.

hmm very odd

i wonder if the 8 7/8 clutch configuration is differnt than the 8 1/2
our block should be identical just differnt head/turbos/internals

i am useing an 8 1/2 jun flywheel at the moment

note: the above numbers are the diamater of the friction disk. the pressure plate bolt spacing IS differnt between the two (not interchangable).. that said some flywheels (fidenza) have bolt holes for both my JUN does not

Alright, well, I'm gonna try going with a starter for the EJ20 (USDM) and see what happens. Thanks, everyone.

FWIW, I'm using a flywheel made for an RS with my 1995 WRX motor. It fits just fine. I did need to take off that sheild thing that's on the bottom of the motor though (that covers the seam between the engine and tranny I think)

Yeah, Mark from Lachute Subaru said that they are all the same from 1996 on. However, I'm not sure if he was talking about EJ20s only.

Well, after talking with Mark and Julien from Lachute, I bought a new starter for the original EJ22 that came in my car. Bolted right up, no problems. Mystery solved, it looks like any manual tranny starter will work, at least post 1996. Not sure about the earlier ones and a later version motor.

Thanks to all.
