Default Advanced Winter Safety School (Or, the Poor Man's Rally School)

A bit of background:

Some of the folks I know from NESIC and I have talked over and over about saving up the cash to go up to Team O'Neil to do one of their multi-day rally schools. Unfortunately, being poor folk (we own Subarus not Audis, afterall - well, except that Jack guy ) scraping together the cash was a challenge, and all of us getting it together at the same time was even more difficult. The common theme was, "Gosh, I just wish I could go up there and drive around in my own car all day."

So I contacted Team O'Neil and asked.

Tim was interesting in the possibility of doing a two-day advanced winter safety course where we drive our own cars and focus on more advanced topics (LFB, pendulum turns, etc.) We may also drive on a bit more of their course than we get to see during the winter safety schools.

To make it financially worth their while, we need 6 to 8 people willing to pay $500 to $700 each. (You'd normally pay around $2,000 for this.)

To keep the course progressing nicely, we'd want folks who have been there before, and you'd have to have good snow tires on your car. Additionally, most of the school's weekend dates are booked, so we'd be looking at two weekdays or, at best, a Friday-Saturday.

So, if you:

a.) have taken the Winter Safety course before
b.) have a good set of snow tires
c.) can take one or two days off of work
d.) can part with $500 to $700

... would you be interested?

If there's sufficient interest, (at least 6 people who meet the above requirements) we can firm the details up a bit more.

I know I'm down.

If the mention of snow tires didn't clue you in, we're looking at doing this this winter, so you have a few months to save up your pennies.

Starting a new list here...

I've done the 1-day winter school (not to mention multiple rallies as co-driver) and I have cash to burn on driving. Full set of Hakka 1's with tread (as long as they survive the rally-x tomorrow).

Put me down, as long as it doesn't conflict with a rally (not likely, in Jan or Feb). Friday-Saturday works best for me...

I fit all the requirements except the cash bit

If it was later this year I could start saving for it though! If it was during the summer, no way

I would so be down for this. He did this two years ago- not sure what the turnout was, but even with 5 or 6 people I'm sure he could make it worth his while.

Possibly, although it's hard to say as far as money goes. Put me down as "interested but possibly poor."

No, no, I changed my mind. $500 is too much for me to spank my own car around for only 2 days. If I do this, I'm doing one of the 3+ schools with their cars. Scratch my name off the pre-list, sorry...

I'd definitely be interested and can probably afford it. The only hold up may be 6 month old twins I'll have come next winter, but hopefully I can convince the wife that I need to go!

Sorry for the long stretch between updates. I've been off-line for about a week while I was away at Mosport.

So, the count looks promising. Anyone else interested? (i.e., bump.)

I'm interested, though I'm wondering if you could elaborate on what we'd be getting? $500-700 seems like quite a lot for two days of using my own car. If that's the price for 6 people, would it be half that for 12? Does the location support more cars? We wouldn't be driving all day each day, so you could run heats, right?

Hey, so, I found this ball rolling around over here in my court somewhere and I figured I'd pick it up.

The material the course would cover would be pretty much the same as what's covered in their standard two-day rally school. When I last spoke to Tim, he wanted to keep class sizes between 6 and 8, to maximize seat time and the student/instructor ratio.

Who is still interested? I'd like to have a pretty firm list so please don't call yourself in if the money is a maybe or something.

To recap the requirements:

* You have taken the Team O'Neil Winter Safety Course at least once before

* You have good snow tires

* You'll have $500 to $700 to spend in the winter if this gets scheduled.

Now that winter is getting near, if we've got 6 to 8 people who are definitely in, I can contact Team O'Neil again and see if they're still interested and maybe pick a date.

I own more sets of snow tires than most people have tires....

But I used to own an Audi....actually 2 different ones....so I'm out.

Why does owning an Audi disqualify you?

After-all, there's at least one Rally Neon on this board.

I am very interested. I can do it, as long as it's not sometime in mid January.

I'm getting snows towards end November, probably Blizzak, may try Gislaved. not gonna go with Nokian hakka.

I've done the rallyx school in Colorado.
No, I have not been to Tim's, but drove 6 winters in Colorado, many days and nights with snowstorms (cause that's when riding is best and you have to get to the mountains).

I have 2 years rallyX excerience in my old Outback, and came in 2nd overall for the year (2002, PGT, Continental Divide region), right behind Rupert Berrington (a photographer for magazines like Grassroots Motorsports) in his WRX. I hope i don't sound cocky, but I'm just hoping that that may help qualify me.

Maybe he's referring to the fact that owning an Audi will bankrupt you Or that he's trying to make up now all the time that he spent tinkering with it to keep it running well...

I'm interested in this. I have to take the safety course and get winter tires, which I was planning on doing anyway. If you're going to do this later on in the winter that would be great.

I'm very interested.. Buuuut, grandma probably won't let me run the WRX, my own car would probably break in half if Tim drove it, I haven't got $700 to my name, and to top things off, one of my snow tires has a nasty tear in the sidewall..

So uh.. Ya. At least I've taken the first safety course.
