Default Has anyone not blown thier motor!?

So I got my stock 03 ECU reflashed. Pretty cool. It rund like I imagined it would before I bought it. So I say to my sellf "self, if a little is good why not a boat load more?" I get to thinking, torbo upgrade, full exaust, EDU retune etc.. You know the drill, I am thinking I would be happy at, say, 230 wheel hp. I know you always want more but that would be my initial target.

Then I start reading this forum and discover everybody(figuratively not literally) so I wonder, on an 03 WRX, I keep losing the designation EJ22 or something, please feel free to correct me, I wonder how much power and boost is safe. When I mean safe, I mean I would like to drive the car 50,000 miles or more even and autocross and occationaly track it bvefore selling it or stuffing a new motor in it.

What about the gear box. I am confused if it is just the clutch and associated components or if it actually the gear box itself that has exposure. I see the 250 hp figure for the tranny. Max. That blows. I hope it is just teh clutch assy "they" refer to.

If all this is true, it sure would be cheaper to trade it in and buy an STI. I bought this one becaue I thought it would be fun to tune. I have been having a blast with the FULL suspension rework. I get to the engine and all of a sudden, I feel that perhaps I am barking up the wrong tree with this model.

Sure any mod affects reliability, but where is the line crossed where the internals REALLY can not stand it long term? 260hp? 285hp? perhaps 330hp? Anybody?

i've been boosted for maybe 1000 miles and no problems, but that's at barely 4psi and i need more boost...lots more boost...

edit, but you're in a rex which is a whole different ballgame.

Isn't it the same tranny though? Is the block the same? I assume lots of internals are shared. That would be a logical business decision on Subaru's part. What do I know though. I am the guy asking the questions.

No, 2.5L vs. 2.0L definately different internals. As for the trannies yes same gears but different final drive ratios (correct me if I'm wrong). Then different years have different engine internals.

But basically the numeric designation refers to the displacement...so ej25 is the 2.5, ej22 is the 2.2L, and ej20 is the 2.0L (what's in the WRX).

IMHO, I think this should be moved to the Factory Forced Induction forum from the questions you're asking.

Hey Mancini, Got off topic there for a second. No, I am talking about adding aftermarket turbo and IC. That is what seems to be causing engine failure. I think this is the right place but if you want it moved of if misunderstand the purpose of this forum I will move it.

If I had a new car, I could do it without blowing my motor now.

I'm going to regret posting this but here goes. I have put maybe 40k on my turbo running about 10 psi on stock ej25 and not blown anything and compression is good. *knock on wood*

Well i take that back, I am on tranny number 3. But on the other hand I have a friend with a rex with utek, turboback uppipe and he hasnt blown any tranny. I do admit that my initial driving on the tranny was much too hard, and Ive learned to basically ride the s**t out of the clutch to save the gearbox. Making the power with the rex doesnt seem to be that hard, but keeping the tranny is a whole different story.

As 8 says, most of us would probably not blow up the 2nd time. If you dig into each of the blown motor stories, it usually starts out with a "I wonder if I..."

It's all in good fun though, right?

I'm on engine number two, have had boost since 99 and have traveled 80,000 boosted miles. The first engine made it to 153,000 miles before going. (car currently has 193,000 miles) Realize the first turbo setup pretty much sucked. I had no proper fuel management, no IC and really bad exhaust.

Now it's mandrel bent exhaust, (see www.uniquemotorsports.com), TMIC, RRFPR, 7psi and I feel pretty safe. This is also on a 1.8 though, so even though my 2nd gear is damaged my original tranny is still holding up.

Well, I for one, have not blown up my motor. But then again, running 8:1 compression on a naturally aspirated motor isnt all that much stress is it?... we'll wait and see what 14 PSI does in a few months
